Default Fines For Texting While Walking In US Town

Fines For Texting While Walking In US Town

Pedestrians could be fined if caught using their
mobile phones in new clampdown

The clampdown comes after a rise in the number of jaywalking incidents, where pedestrians cross roads illegally or recklessly, instead of using marked routes.
Officers in Fort Lee, New Jersey, have said some people are constantly putting themselves at risk of being hit by vehicles because they do not pay attention.
Police are stepping up patrols looking for "dangerous" walkers who are not obeying the rules of the road.
They have been handing out leaflets warning pedestrians about the crackdown.
So far this year, more than 20 people have been hit by cars in Fort Lee.
"It's a big distraction. Pedestrians aren't watching where they're going. They're not aware," said Fort Lee Police chief Thomas Ripoli at a news conference.
One resident Sue Choe admitted she texts and walks "all the time," but added: "When I walk, I still look around. I'm not constantly looking down."
In the last month-and-a-half, at least 117 tickets have been issued for jaywalking - an offence which carries a fine of $85 (£53).

Yeah, let's fine people for texting while walking, when it's still not illegal to text while you drive in most states...

:)

Texting is one of the worst things that technology brought us. I want to stab everyone that texts while driving. Talking on the phone too for that matter.

Good. Ever watched the videos of people getting into stupid situations while texting, woman walking and falling into a fountain at the mall while texting, man walking up to a BEAR while texting. We live in a time where we have to pass laws for people to slow down when they see emergency vehicles off to the side of the road ffs, people just cant be trusted to do the right thing and not be apathetic morons.

Best not be looking at a map either, I suppose. Serious BS here.
Probably not, you should pay attention to what ever you are doing.

How hard is it to stop for 10 seconds?

I rarely text, so no empathy from me folks from Fort Lee, New Jersey. I hope I'll never see the logic in this and become one of 'them', I just don't get why people constantly text wherever they go. And I dare to bet more than half the text is pointless, as in, just chatting without anything but social purposes. I mean, when you're home or just standing still on a place wherever on earth it's obvious you've got the time to chat, but when you're walking from place to place you obviously haven't.

I think it should be like this, I'll drive this:

If you get out of the way, you don't get squished otherwise, I get to squish you.

Why would we want to stop these idiots from falling into manholes/fountains or getting hit by cars!? Genetic cleansing anyone?

hm... well Nofile, i figure the 767 is set up so texting and "driving" would be kinda OK (if they could get signal at 30k feet. maybe if you are riding a motorcycle you should limit your texting!

I think most of the "save yourself from yourself" laws are not a necessity, or even a valid premise. but i have the notion we really should not try so hard to save all and sundry. my opinion is that we have upset the flow of things and ma nature will even the score at some point. but... they wont let me decide who ranks in the "don't let 'em breed" category so no hope there, i am against any one else deciding!

for work, i text often, it is efficient. my Bluetooth allows me to say "text so and so" and then say the message, then say send. so i still have my hands on the wheel, and i am proficient at multitasking when one task is speaking, one is thinking, and one is driving. but i will send my itinerary to any who do not share my faith in e so you might schedule when to stay off which roads.

as for walking and texting... i do not walk except for pleasure and i do not text except for work, so i do not mix the two.

smiling,
Mandy

I find it really annoying when people can't text and walk at the same time, it's not that hard, they either walk into people or just walk into the road.
