Default Fishermen reel in shark the size of a school bus

By David R Arnott

Fishermen in the Pakistani port of Karachi got more than they bargained for Tuesday as they reeled in one of the biggest fish in the sea: a whale shark.

The Express Tribune, a Pakistani newspaper, reported that the 40-foot fish was first spotted ten days ago in seas about 150 km (93 miles) from the city. Mehmood Khan, the owner of a local fishery, said the shark was unconscious at that time and other reports said that it was found dead Tuesday.

A large crowd gathered as a succession of cranes were brought in to lift the shark on to the pier. After several hours and a number of failed attempts, the leviathan was finally brought ashore and promptly sold for 1.7m Rupees ($18,750).

The whale shark was added to the World Conservation Union's list of threatened species in 2008.

For some reason I think it looks delicious! I wouldn't want to be drowning near a living version of that shark though.

That shark would be no threat to you (it's vegetarian). Your main concern would be the drowning part, not the shark. Sharks hardly kill people anyway. Look it up on wikipedia.

When I used to ride planes and think of crashing into the sea, I never really feared the crashing part, I feared the drowning part and what kind of monstrous creatures could be lurking there to eat us lol!

They eat plankton, which are any microscopic organism in the water...from plants to animals to bacteria.

True, sharks rarely kill people. It's the bleeding to death that kills them. I wouldn't go swimming with any tiger sharks or bull sharks though.

whale sharks are pelagic, found most times in the open ocean, only common near shore at certain times eg plankton aggregation points, and breeding areas. once is off the SW of western australia. Beautiful and gentle creatures - a dive with them is a memory that u will not forget.

also declining.

Default 7000kg Whale Shark!!

Karachi: In what is believed to be one of the biggest catch in the high seas, Pakistani fishermen have caught a giant whale shark - about 36 foot long and weighing over 7,000 kg.

The fishermen brought the giant fish to the Karachi Fish Harbour and claimed to have found it dead in the open sea.

Some experts believe that the shark might have been killed after it got entangled in a net, a Pakistan daily reported.

The whale shark was taken out of the channel with the help of two cranes amid rapturous applause by hundreds of onlookers.

"I have bought the fish, which usually has no significant commercial value, with the help of my friends just to appreciate the efforts of the fishermen who deserve some reward after spending an entire day in the open sea," Haji Qasim, the man who bought the fish for Rs. 2 lakh, was quoted as saying by the daily.

The authorities, he said, had allowed him to keep the fish at the harbour for at least three days for public viewing.

"Then I will sell the meat to the people running poultry meat business," he said.

The shark was spotted floating unconscious in the sea ten days ago, around 90 miles away from the shore, another daily reported.

A British daily reported that the largest confirmed whale shark was 41ft long but it is thought they can grow to considerably greater lengths.

The shark is found in tropical waters and lives for around 70 years. They feed mainly on plankton, microscopic plants and sometimes small fish.

The whale shark, a gentle giant of the seas, does not pose a significant danger to humans - and in the past some have even allowed swimmers to hitch a ride on their fins, the daily reported.

Wrong story - no one caught it! The whale got stuck near the harbor and was dead before they could help her.. they used many Cranes/machines to move it from that place
