Default Are insurance companies spying on your Facebook page?

Quote:
LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The next time you post something on Facebook or Twitter, ask yourself: who else is looking at this besides my friends?

That's because your insurance company could be monitoring your accounts, looking for information that could raise your premium or even deny your claim.

Kurt Nordland never dreamed photos he posted on his Facebook page would create huge problems.

The pictures show him drinking a beer and relaxing with his friends at the beach.

But his friends weren't the only ones checking out his Facebook status.

Investigators from the insurance company paying his worker's comp benefits were watching his Facebook account too.

And soon after the photos were posted, the insurance company canceled his payments, cut off his medical benefits and Nordland had to delay surgery to repair torn cartilage in his shoulder.

"I was extremely surprised they could just go on your Facebook and pull these pictures out," Nordland said.

What Nordland experienced is a trend happening all over the country: insurance companies snooping on social media sites

Isn't this illegal to snoop? Or am I too optimistic that there are laws preventing this invasion of privacy?

Anyway, it is a good thing I was too lazy to go on Facebook...

Apparently this stuff has been going on for a while now. In March of 2010 I was injured on the job resulting in the need for surgery. @ my very first meeting with my attorney he told me to remove any photos of myself that could be damaging to my case. I deleted my whole F.B. account and haven't looked back since. What I dont understand is, what is so horrible about sitting on a beach drinking a beer? Does this mean I am no longer allowed to do anything fun or relaxing?

Any facebook user has already forfeit most rights that protect them just by having a facebook account (read the terms of service and the likes). Plus if they're truly investigators facebook may be selling that info to them, so there's nothing illegal about it, more like a moral issue.

It's your choice to share your previously privates in a public domain. As Nofile said, once on the internet, always on the internet, always to see for everyone.

All the insurance companies do is just looking at what you consciously chose to leave behind on the net.

For those who think disabling their Facebook account deletes everything, it doesn't. You'll notice that the link below isn't publicly shown in your account settings.

Companies shouldn't change your premium or flat out deny you because of photos, etc. but it's also up to people to enable and strengthen their privacy settings.

If you want to properly remove your account, use this link:

http://www.facebook.com/help/contact.php?show_form=delete_account
If you click 'Submit' do not attempt to log in for 14 days or it will cancel the deletion request.
