Default Problem with MKV movies

Hi guys,

just wanted to ask if anyone can help my friend. I gave him "few" movies in hd & he told me, its not working properly.
Problem is that sound is ahead of picture or picture freeze completely. I sent him codecs AVC core (latest) to fix it, but he said it didnt help.

I personaly think that him problem is hardware (mostly graphic card) he is not sure of his configuration (but I think that it is only 256mb of memory on graphic)
But he is telling me, that he checked specs and it should be enough for hd movies.

I dont know, do you have any ideas what can he try to do? I mean except UPGRADE :D
Is it possible that problem is Windows? He is using Vista.

Dont tell him, but I really think problem is his obsolete laptop :D

Thanx in advance guys

Can you play these files without those issues? If so its either codec or HW related. Unless HD I can play video files in 95 on really old hardware. Only time I notice anything is during really fast scene changes.

If the hardware is to old or fast enough then it won't make a difference. Some people just don't know how to encode properly. If the bit rate is higher then whats needed older hardware just can't keep up.

Also sometimes having too many codex can be an issue as well.

Thanx guys for help, I will try to send him a link for that codec site.
Hard to say what is the problem, cause I only heard about it too (he is my colleague from work) I gave him lot of movies, series etc and everything is 720p or 1080p only! All of those things are working perfectly on my laptop and tv (support for mkv) too.

But thanx again

Ok, most likely his set-up is mkv intolerant. With the magic of TsMuxer, remux one of those movies to .m2ts. Lets see how it goes.

Once again, do you have issues playing the same files? If not exactly how slow is his pc compared to yours? I can play mkv's on a p75 with windows 2k or win 95. Some will have the aforementioned lip sync problem. But those are the higher bit rate encodes.

With old hardware and HD movies this happens with 1080p videos but generally doesn't happen with 720p ones.

Then instead of having too many codecs installed you could try KMplayer, a very good free player that uses only its internal codecs without messing the system.

So my advice is max. 720p with KMplayer - after installation follow the wizard, it's the best thing to do if you have out of date hardware :)

Thanx again, I will try to answer everyone :D
All the movie, series and everything runs with no problem on my laptop and my tv too. (conected straight to tv which support mkv)
His laptop is maybe 50per slower than mine, (not true anymore, cause I just bought new one, REAAALY GOOD :D)
I have already gave him KMplayere, cause I am using this one for a long time now. But before I had to install EXTERNAL codecs as well (not on my new laptop, its working perfectly now even without external codecs) I gave him AVC core (latest)
And I never heard about TsMuxer, but I will definitely tell him about it!

So once again, great help, appreciate it and THANx

You posted the same question yesterday.
I responded and had some questions but you never answered them.

If he is trying to play a high profile 1080p movie it may be too much for the GPU.
But you also need to see if the video player he is using has the option of unloading the encoding of the movie from the cpu to the gpu.

You can check the cpu usage while playing a movie to see the usage.
If it's pegging at 100% then the gpu is not being used to encode the playback.

thanx man for telling me about previous post, I know I made it twice, but the first one I was not able to see (dont know why) so I made a new one.

I have already txted him about what u said in previous post. I will have to wait for his response. Cause I am off until monday.
And yes, it is mostly 1080p rips, but there was couple of movies in 720p too.
He already told me that he tried Klite (or something like that, I dont know that player) and he said it help, but after that he told me that it is not in HD anymore :D
I mean the picture quality.

So now I will wait and when I will learn more, I will let u guys know.
Thanx again
