Exclamation Triclosan: Widely Used Antibacterial Chemical May Impair Muscle Function

"Triclosan, which is widely used in consumer handsoaps, toothpaste, clothes, carpets and trash bags, impairs muscle function in animal studies, say researchers at UC Davis (abstract). It slows swimming in fish and reduces muscle strength in mice. It may even impair the ability of heart muscle cells to contract.

The chemical is in everyone's home and pervasive in the environment, the lead researcher says. One million pounds of Triclosan is produced in the U.S. annually and it's found in waterways, fish, dolphins, human urine, blood and breast milk.

The researchers say their findings 'Call for a dramatic reduction in use.' It's in my Colgate Total toothpaste, and in fact, preventing gingivitis is the only use that may be worthwhile, although this makes me think twice about continuing to brush with it." This isn't the first time Triclosan has been in the news over safety concerns.

I smoke and drink coffee (sip it all day long 2 huge cups worth). After 4 hours i can feel a rough film starting at my back molars. So I brush. Normally I brush only twice a day for 7 minutes each. If I happen to brush in the middle of the day I only do it for 4 minutes. Brushing too much with arm and hammer tooth paste will wear the enamel down faster then a cavity :)

Tough luck with your toothpaste FirtY. This is a new one for me. Geez... what next. Considering how 'anti-bacterial' Americans have become this is not good news.

Besides the generic Triclosan name it also comes under the trade names Microban®, Irgasan® and Irgacare®.

I found a list of products containing this wonder drug. LOL.... there goes my Revlon ColorStay LipSHINE Lipcolor, First Aid/Burn Cream, Fruit of the Loom Socks, and Softsoap® Antibacterial Liquid Hand Soap. Oh my. I really liked that First Aid/Burn Cream - been using it since I was a kid. Hmm.... maybe that's why I can't run fast.

Seems there's more to the side effects than impaired muscle function. According to the Federal Drug Administration, "Animal studies have shown that triclosan alters hormone regulation." Hormone disruption or disruption in the endocrine system can lead to cancer, male and female hormone disorders, and effect every part of the body that is regulated by hormones. *sigh*

Ok. So why is the FDA sitting on this one?

hmm. I can see Cyberkingdom scrutinizing his lubricants ingredients labels right now - to avoid "muscle function impairment".

Probably the same thing they're NOT doing with aspartame. (the stuff that has properties which turn to alcohol once you consume it. Alcohol being poisonous and all, is no good for you)

As for all of your products, they probably have many more ingredients that are also bad for you. I bet you'l find "Sodium Lauryl Sulfate" in there too! That stuff pretty much dissolves your skins natural oils, a not so welcome side effect which can last up to a few weeks I think? (I just read about this stuff, I don't actually do the scientific studies! Not that I think anyone here would make that assumption)

I am pretty sure Asparthame turns to something similar to embalming fluid when it is heated in the body
