Default Yale Researchers Developing ‘Stay-Sober’ Pill

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (CBS Connecticut) – An experimental drug could stop people from getting drunk off alcohol and thus helping heavy drinkers wean off alcohol.

Yale University researchers are hypothesizing that the drug iomazenil, when taken before drinking, can weaken some of the effects of alcohol on the brain. According to a recent pilot study conducted by the researchers, the effects of alcohol on those people who took iomazenil caused people to stay sober for longer.

The Daily Telegraph reports that the researchers hope to develop a “stay-sober” pill from iomazenil. The project is examining what the effect of the drug is on alcohol intoxication and how volunteer drunk drivers are affected while driving, if they ingest the pill before drinking.

“A medication that has the potential to block alcohol actions in the central nervous system could act as a unique medication in the treatment of alcohol intoxication and alcoholism,” Yale researcher Deepak D’Souza told the Daily Telegraph. “Alcohol is abused commonly but there is no remedy for alcohol intoxication.”

Researchers hope the drug will help reduce the amount of damage done to the liver from alcohol.

Even if perfected, I doubt there'd be many people buying it. I mean, I don't drink because I like the taste of alcohol, or because I'm trying to keep pace with my friends. I drink to get drunk (well moderately inebriated at least), period.

I think this research is being paid for by Jack Daniels to be honest. That way, instead of spending $50 to get drunk, I'd have to spend $500, and wouldn't that make our friends in Lynchburg very happy?

:)

Wow! An alcoholic is addicted to the alcohol, the euphoric effect diminishes with time used. So the alcoholic tends to progressively drink more with time. So you give them this pill (with an unmentioned list of side effects) and I would guess he would just drink more. Not sure it would help save livers!

Smiles,
Mandy

Isn't the point of alcohol to effect the brain?

depending on the way this drug changes the effects of alcohol on your brain, you might be able to design a sober up pill from it.
Meaning that you don´t have to take it before, but after alcohol is consumed.
Believe me, bouncer and police are gona kill for that :)
This is just the first step, just like the get drunk stick a few days ago.

I used to dabble in occasional chemical substances (LSD) and I could drink anything I wanted and not get drunk, but whenever I took it, I still went drinking, more in a night than I usually drank in a week, despite knowing I couldn't get drunk.
