How many of you are organ donors? I ask this because today while getting a new ID, the guy next to me was getting one too, and an attendant asked him if he was an organ donor, and he said "no" and the attendant asked him if he wanted to be, and he said "no" yet again. And I couldn't help but wonder why.
This discussion is open to anyone, but particularly towards people who aren't organ donors. My opinion is, once I'm dead I have no use for them, so why not save a life? I can understand certain religions maybe not allowing it, but if you aren't an organ donor, and don't want to be, I ask why. This isn't a flame thread. I just want opinions.

I am not an organ donor. Didn't think to hard about it when I was asked....just simple no. Even after thinking about it now I'm glad I said no. I don't care if I'm dead or not...I want my body parts forever....until they deteriorate into nothingness in my rotting corpse.

I'm not an organ donor either, but if I died, I would allow people to take my parts to help other people get better

You'd have to go to the DMV and ask to become an organ donor, they wouldn't even have to make you a new card, they would update it into the state registry.

Right here in Singapore, most people are burnt into ashes, so before your body becomes something useless (into a peck of dust), why not. But if I am alive, no way unless it is for my loved ones I might consider.

You don't see that as selfish in anyway? Have you ever had a close friend or relative dying from a failed organ, and only has days to live while waiting on an organ to become available? And the several organs you'd never use again could save a mother of 4, or a 10 year old boy...

I see it as 100% selfish. I can live with that. Just because I don't wanna give my organs doesn't make me a bad person. I would rather just not part from my organs. I help others in many other ways....but when it comes to this subject, I would prefer keeping what I've had my entire life with me and not in someone else. Also what in the 1 and a million chance my organ gets transplanted into a rapist/killer? To each their own I suppose.

Well i'm not one.. and the only reason i can give is im too lazy to go and register at that some special office.. if things like that could be done online or i got a chance some place where i was..then i'd do it without a second thought.. i really couldn't care any less about what people do with my body after i'm dead.. :P

Let me ask this, how would you feel if you were in a life or death situation where u would need a transplant, do you think you would be deserving of a new organ to save your life?

I refuse to sign up as an organ donor because of the level of opiates I take as medication. My kidneys would be of little use to anyone, as would my liver. My eyes are not the best, my heart is about to give out at any time, and I've been smoking since I was 9 (40 years), so I couldn't see my lungs being of much use to anyone. I like the concept, and if it wasn't for a poor state of health, and years of taking strong medication which destroys the usable bits, I would be only too happy to be on the donor list. In Australia, we have a system where you tick a box on your license application, and in the case of any disaster, the records are on the computer, and on your ID, so hopefully, surgeons can retrieve necessary organs in a hurry if you are in a motor vehicle fatality.
