Can anyone name some books where the magic system in the story turned out to be fake? Like the magic didn't actually exist even though the main character thought otherwise?

@tera_happy: I don't know if it is what you are looking for, but if you are interested in literary theory and gender you should definitely read Svetlan Todorov's The Fantastic: A Structural Approach to a Literary Genre (the chapter about the "uncanny", i.e. stories full of events that seem supernatural but in the end have a rational explanation).
