(Apologies if this question has been answered in this thread previously.)
AbbyFine reader pro is what I use to scan. Some use the free ware version but I prefer pro because I can edit out the headers and page numbers before sending to word. It can be found here

As a Kindle owner I really like mine but I would wait for the new Nook Touch that comes out this month. It's got some really nice features and it uses Epub. It does have the new Pearl screen and a SD Card Slot. The backing is rubberized and it's an ounce lighter and smaller/thinner then a Kindle. B&N claims battery life is 2 months. It however does not have a browser like the Kindle but it's faster and less page flashing.
I like the idea of touch screen but it still has page turn buttons on either side. The Kindle 3 navigation is not the best. The five way button is not made for fat fingers with the back button underneath it, I can't count how many times I hit it instead of the 5 way! However If Kindle comes out with a touch ereader comparable to the Nook Touch I would go with that in second!

As for Calibre, Epub/Lit/Html work best for conversation. PDF is the worst and takes some skill and several software programs to get a good editable copy. I prefer Epub as my source as long and it is an original. It converts to Mobi beautifully! Calibre converted epub not so much when working with Mobi.

Just a little clatification on touch screens. Kindle does not have a touch screen because at the moment it is IMPOSSIBLE to make a glare free touch screen. It has something to do with a film required on the glass. I saw an interview with Jeff Bexos (Amazon's CEO) in response to this subject. He said the Kindle is meant to be a reader that can be read anywhere, and until a glare free method of making a touch screen exists Kindle will not have one. The touch screen is why people have a problem with glare on Sony's screen in direct sunlight. So I will stick with my Kindle as I read on my sunny deck.

I believe the glare issue was on the previous Sonys due to it having an extra layer. The 350, 650 and so on do not have this issue It uses IR Touch technology which does not have any extra layer so no glare. So the new touch reader like Nook Touch and Kobo Touch will not have glare issues either. The new Kindle in the works will have this technology as well when ever it comes out. It probably be around Christmas I see Kindle Android tablet being released first to compete with the Nook Color.

The Nook Touch is out now.
My friend pick one up last night and is rubbing my face in it. lol

Thanks for the recommendation - that software worked great! I don't remember OmniPage (version old :) ) ever working so well. It went very quickly... and smoothly for a first time project.

Only problem I had was with line breaks, I tried various settings but I still was editing the paragraph flow as I looked for errors.

Shame I don't have more to scan.

you should go with nook touch, or nook color, as they have the new android system that allows you to do many things besides reading!

by the way i was looking around for an ereader for my mom, something cheap cause she doesnt have time for leisure just her technical stuff... and i found the

ematic has anyone used? it can be used as a ereder, videoplayer and music player and its around 75 dollars in pages such as walmart and amazon.

Also I;m checking Coby Kyrios and Iq 701, both have android but its 2.1 and they haven really update it to 2.2.
If some one out there have them, can you share your thoughts about them?

thanks

So to the DOCX gurus around here, how do you get Calibre to 'see' DOCX files in a folder? I realized by accident after importing a boatload of books into Calibre that the program does not recognize DOCX files (deleted everything else that imported, and according to Calibre nothing was left in the folder), so I convert any I download to RTF immediately before importing into Calibre. Is there a quick plug-in or conversion tool that can be used without having to open Word and do a Save As? Thanks.

Posted the preliminary spread sheet of my calibre library(pre-duplicate checking) online at my ISP's free web-space. Checked it out and it is working. many of the books can be found here but not all. Please PM me if you would like a book and I will upload it for you.

Somebody here probably knows a better way (admittedly this aint my field) but you may find this useful:

Alternatively you could run the standard PC tools for this kind of thing on your Mac one of two ways:

(a) Use a VM application like Parallels Desktop or VM-Ware fusion to run a 'Virtual' PC on your Mac OS.

(b) Bootcamp your Mac so that it can run either Windows or OSX

Be aware you can only remove DRM from a book you have purchased. The tools in my signature work with calibre and MAC to "break" DRM. They come with directions, but here are directions for the AZW files in simplest terms; first make sure you are using the latest version of calibre and tools. Make sure you have kindle for MAC installed. Find the MobiDeDRM.zip (do not unzip it) file in the tools zip file . Install it in calibre as a plugin by selecting first preferences then plugin then add plugin. For Amazon books you DO NOT need to personalize the plugin. Add new version of your book to your amazon for MAC library from your Amazon archived items. Then add the book to calibre. The plugin will do all the work and a DRM free mobi will be added to you calibre library. That's it. Easy Peasy. PM me if you have problems.

If you're talking about library books, once the book expires find the book file on your computer and strip the DRM. Once you remove the DRM, it won't be expired anymore.

I would do it prior to the expire date! Otherwise your "key" will no longer be active. It is this "key" that is used to strip DRM.

I've always stripped after the expiration date, and its worked for me. Sometimes waaaaay after the expiration date. But on the other hand, I don't know much about de-drming books apart from that I put it through calibre and the plug-ins do it for me.
