Default A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones)

Who's reading this at the moment?

I'll admit that I never knew about this series until the show, but started reading it when the season ended.

Almost finished with the first book and I'm so excited for the next.

I read the first one before the show started, and promptly decided the show's better when I don't know what's gonna happen... so I've been forcing myself to not read them. It's really damn hard, like kicking ciggies.

I just finished the 4th one and started the 5th.
4th is the worst of the 5 so far, but it does pick up on the 5th.

All in all, quite a good series, and the second season of the TV show does make a lot of serious changes, although that is understandable.

Not a big fan of the second season. Too many changes to good moments in the book. Agreed that the 4th book is quite poor, not a fan of most the characters exact for the Dornish chapters. Would recommend reading the synopses online.

I should pick them up. I hear they are great. There are supposed to be 7 books in all but there are only 5 of them. Sadly he releases them at an extremely slow pace. One book was released 5 years apart from the other, while another was released 6 years. I think HBO should have waited at least until there was 6 books out. We don't know if he'll release them in time. Also there's the little problem that people are worried because of his age. Hell sadly Robert Jordan wasn't able to finish The Wheel of Time series. Brandon Sanderson is finishing that, and many say it isn't the same.

Well I hope he's able to finish it, it is kind of his, big baby type of thing.

I have several friends reading it, and they DO NOT shut up about it. From what ive heard about it, it sounds very well done. im considering checking it out, since no one ever has anything bad to say about them.

I watched the first two seasons of game of thrones, but i haven't read the books yet. My girlfriend read them all over the last few months and she loved it. So i guess i will start to read all of them too before the next season starts.

Got the novel bookmarked TP, thanks for the heads up. I didn't even know either that the series was based on a book (couldn't care to do any research on the TV series).

I too didn't know about the books before the show but now have read the first two. I don't know if I want to read book 3 before the season 3. I always have this problem when it comes to book adapted shows/movies.

I agree, I found the 4th book A Feast for Crows a bit of a slog but enjoyed A Dance with Dragons. The Winds of Winter is next.

One issue is the long delay between the books: 5 years between books 3 & 4, then 6 years between 4 & 5. At this rate the next book will be out in 2018(possibly). I'm glad I only started reading them last year after HBO's show as the wait between books would have driven me mad.

I'm an avid reader of sci-fi, fantasy, thrillers and the whole lot.
My neighbour is one of the managers of Luitingh Fantasy (main fantasy publisher over here) and has been filling my room with tons of books over the years, of course I couldn't miss the work of R.R. Martin, Williams, Jordan and Hobb and I'm pretty sure I read all their material over the years.

When I just finished Crown I heard a series was in the making and I was excited and a bit afraid as well because of a possible failure.

Just a heads up (my neighbour talked to George about a Dutch version of Ice/Fire), the last two books will be finished in a much faster rate than previous releases due to pressure from HBO and fans alike.

Its a great fantasy series, book and TV and a must read for serious lovers of the genre same as Lord of the Rings is
The complexity and depth of characters is its strength for me that and the fact its very well written obviously but its not in my top five series of fantasy books.......and in comparison to the series of books I take my pseudonym on here from? It gets its head kicked in

I read it, but I still cannot fathom the stupidity of all the characters... all of them trying to be king while the monster hordes are literally at their gates...

That's the point, in the story magic and monsters are fairy tales for most people. Just like our world. Everyone is greedy and wants more power, neglecting important stuff at the same time.

It's almost a tip for modern day politicans ^^
