I had read the 1st book and a little bit of the 2nd book before the TV Series was aired. But haven't read after that. Oh I have also read a novella too which is kind of a prequel to the SOIAF series.

I've been following the ASOIAF series since sometime back in 2000. I really enjoy the books, its just a shame that they have taken so long to release. I keep starting A Dance with Dragons, but I only vaguely remember the plot setup from book 3. I need to go back and re-read Storm of Swords. Books four, a Feast for Crows, and five, A Dance with Dragons, happen in tandem chronologically. They were split and rewritten for publishing reasons. The split was partially to blame for the long delay in release, but still it puts about ten years between now and the last time I read Storm of Swords. I really hope the rumors are correct about HBO pushing to speed up the progress on the final books, I don't know if I can take another 5 year interval between books! When I heard there was an HBO series coming out I met it with real mixed emotions. The series was announced to be working with Martin. I read that to mean HBO would likely keep the show true to the books, but it would also consume the author's time and be yet another distraction. Martin seems to be involved in so many ASOIAF side projects already, tabletop RPG books, Video games, card games, and other assorted merchandise, the addition of a TV series to the works just seemed like a bad idea. I have to admit though, the show exceeded my expectations. I've watched every episode, and look forward to the next season. It makes me want to reread the books and get all the nuances that the TV show just can't explore due to time constraints. Deathpunch already alluded to it but if you like the books and world but don't want to spoil the twists for the TV series, there's a series of prequels being produced. The Hedge Knight, Sworn Sword, and Mystery Knight have all been released. The first two were released in the Legends I and II anthologies, and the third in the Warriors I anthology. They take place well before A Game of Thrones, so they shouldn't spoil anything. I think one of those was probably the novella DeathPunch was referring to. They are also being released as Graphic Novels individually under the names of their short stories, so keep that in mind if you go looking for them. Don't get the graphic novels thinking you are getting the short story in written version. I've heard that once the 4th novella is released they will collect them together and release them as an official single volume, but that's still forthcoming. |

I am not normally into these type of books but the show caught my interest & I spent all last summer reading through the entire series. Loved them! Can't wait for the next one to come out.
