You are effectively saying the advantage is making virtual rar, real ram... Which wouldn't be an advantage without a necessity.
Such as?

And because windows uses HDD paging no matter how much ram you have unless you force it?

edit video's or do some heavy graphic design / 3d modeling / animation then you will not notice any difference above 8gb

Uses for large databases, ram disks, virtuisation, distributed computing, cryptography... I could go on.

The only real ram performance related use of the page file is for when you do not not have ram left and then that data is paged to virtual memory (page file).

"When your computer's physically installed random-access memory (RAM) is running low, Windows adds available memory by using a paging file, generally known as virtual memory, on the hard disk to simulate physical RAM."

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308417
If there is anything that would meaningfully increase performance by placing the paging file in ram let me know (there isn't).

There are many premium private game servers uses 8GB to 16GB, mainly SQL DB can config to take use from 32MB to 4GB+. And SSD users disabled pagefile can truly benefit up to 16GB and more. But honestly, i think 16GB is the most we will ever need for the next 5 years of gaming and creativity, or perhaps can last even more.

Heck even Skyrim couldn't use 4 gig when it came out. You could force it to, but I think that realistically from a strictly gaming perspective, your GPU has way more to do with running a game than RAM.

If you buy the absolute best possible GPU that your computer will support, and have 4-6 gig of memory, a reasonable quad core, and a decent hard drive you can run any game made.

Thing is, the extra RAM space is provided for stored whatever programs user or OS loaded earlier, because OS will not wipe the closed app data and so it has become a prefetch storage, making programs reboot so much faster reading from RAM and less to non harddrive activity.

In the future if RAM gets cheaper and cheaper, it should be used as a virtual hard drive .

Considering that a lot of games don't run in 64bit, 4GB is pretty much overkill.

You'll only need 8GB or more for video and photo editing, stitching gigapixel panoramas and other intense things like that - games, at least imo, for the next 5 years at least won't make use of 8GB.

every 10 years the amount of ram increased exponentially. in the 80's it was kilobytes, the 90's mega bytes, 2000 giga bytes the pace has slowed some because of consoles . but i can see the time soon when terrabytes will be the standard.
what is for sure is that ddr ram is approaching its limits, ddr4 will be here next year and ddr5 the year or maybe 2 after that. then we will likely switch to xdr2 ram.
for now 8 gigs is the standard most are aiming for but as most games are still 32bit they will only ever need a maxium of 2-3 gigs. when dice switch to 64bit only next year its likely you will need 8-16 gigs but most of that wont be for the game engine it will be to stream textures. max payne 3 is the first to use more than 8 gigs but it has little impact on the game... i have 6gigs and i find its plenty...for now.

Well, to be fair I was replying to the OP who was "strictly talking about gaming" no doubt 8 gig is not enough even today for a lot of different non-gaming programs and tasks.

People were doing that in the 90's when memory was $10 a Meg. Compared to that, memory is dirt cheap now.

Pfft ram? You are using it right now :P

You won't be seeing consumer class quantum computers for another 200 years to come!

I remember the early 90's when 2MBs were considered more than enough for gaming. Time flies. Before you know it 8GB will seem like 8k.
