Default EA: Digital Sales to Overtake Box Retail Game Sales in 2 to 3 Years

Quote:
Electronic Arts COO Peter Moore spoke with Reuters about the growth in digital sales. EA is changing its focus from physical sales at retails, to the digital market. The publishers digital revenue increased to $1.3 billion for its previous fiscal year.

"There will come a point, whether it is two or three years from now, when we say. 'We are doing more in digital media now than we are in physical media,' and it's clearly ... not far away," said Moore. "This fiscal year we have 41 social mobile and free-to-play games on the slate, and later in the year we might make announcements about more games coming."

EA has also released its forecast for its current fiscal year which ends March 2013. The publisher expects revenue from the sale of physical games to be $2.6 billion, while digital revenue is expected to increase to $1.7 billion.

"Investors are starting to understand our strategy, are starting to see light at the end of tunnel, starting to see growth rates in the areas we have invested in and in the industry as a whole starting to attract attention again," said Moore.

I am truly surprised it hasn't already.

I can't wait to see the prices drop universally due to the companies saving money on Delivery to shops, Packaging and printing costs (Sarcasm)

Like Fifa 12, they didn't include a game manual in the box to save trees but they included an advertisement for another of their games, the irony.

I doubt prices will actually go down. Let's not forget that not everyone in the world has good Internet connection, then there's the cost of bandwidth. That's going to be the next excuse. Then let's not forget the fact that if you bought a shitty game, you're stuck with it.

Sometimes not even that. Remember not too long ago that a user of the Bioware forum user lost access to his games because of something he said. In the FORUMS.

Same for steam to some extent. Doesn't matter if you have $2000 worth of games on your account, if you get banned you can lose access to all of your games.

At least with a physical disc you could still install it.

It takes A LOT to get banned on steam, though. Really, you only get banned from either scamming or selling your account.

That BioWare thing seems pretty crazy though... that's why I don't participate on official forums >_<
