Default Ram issue

Hey guys ive got a weird issue with my ram set up atm. Basically I had 8gb ram before which was gskill. I went out the other day and got another gskill 8gb kit 2x4 sticks. Installed them a day later. The issues began instantly with windows only detecting 12gb of the 16gb however after updating to the latest bios(F8) windows now only detects 12gb but its sais 7.98gb usable 0_o. If I open up hardware manager and CPUZ they both see the full 16gb so I know it is installed properly. My mobo is a gigabyte 990fxa-ud3. It sais on the board it self it supports DD3 so I know thats not the issue. Any ideas? Ive heard that windows home premium 64bit has a limit of 8gig ram is this true? if so will I need to download ultimate?

Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit supports up to 16GB of RAM.

Have you tried doing a memory test?

try a memory test. also check to make sure that the ram bus speed is compatible with your board. ex 1600mhz, 13333mhz

well first, the obvious questions should be asked... are the dimms you added identical to the ones you previously had ? same timings and latency etc ?

I'm assuming all 4 dimms are identical. I've been reading about quite a few issues with g. skill ram and windows seven 64 bit.

have a look at the posts. the only hardware that seems constant, across all these issues, is the ram and of course the 64bit win.

Try clearing CMOS battery. You know, that button battery on your motherboard. Take it out for about 30 seconds and then put it back.

Very possible, how much RAM is your BIOS reading?
