Default can i clean install windows 7 this way?

Hi everyone

I never like to trouble the moderators here, so I am just saying I hope this is the correct place to post this message.

I searched for answers here for 20 minnutes. I searched other sites too, but I hae a more detailed question about clean installing upgrades.

I am selling my system and therefore will hae a new system and of course clean drives.

As my student card is still valid, I can buy Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit for a reasonable price. Bt this will be the in-place upgrade edition.

One website says I can install this but only over a previous install of Windows.

Another site says you can clean install it by doing a double install without input of the product ket the first time round

Then I searched deeper and found some users claiming a possible clean install on a formatted, zeroed drive using the upgrade disc.

Now I wanted to know from you guys as I believe this forum is the best to come to at times. If I try this will it be possible?

I have searched but not found any upgrade dwnloads to try out first. Does anyone know where I can find any in-place windows 7 upgrade discs please.

I do wish to pay for it 100% but wish to see if it works this way first

Many thanks

There's a windows 7 that you can burn to a cd, and upgrade from.

If you want to do a clean install, I have posted a link to Tiny7, which is a small version of W7 without all the crap.

Directly from microsoft:

Running Windows Vista?
If you have Windows Vista, you can purchase Windows 7 Upgrade versions. You can do a clean install (back up your files, clean install, and reinstall your applications) or an in-place upgrade (Windows 7 installs over Windows Vista).

Hope this helps.

thanks to all

and to teh_masterer, i wanted to ask you...

on that site it says if using VISTA that i can do a clean install with the upgrade disc by backing up my files, then making a clean install

or i can do an inplace install where the install overrides vista

but is this only if i have vista? i assume it means i need to load the disc wthin vista OS then let the system reboot (knowing i selected it from within the OS to begin with) and only then it wil allow a clean install?

but is the first option correct and is that hte answer to my question (that i can have a brand new hard drive in a brand new system build, install windows 7 ultimate inplace dvd disc in a clean install with full activation and features straight out the box)?

sorry my mistake i if i did not make it clear before, but what i wish to do is a simple clean install on a brand new drive without an previous windows on it. like a simple boot up with the installer dvd like i do for my retail copy of home premium

is this possible and microsoft just dont want us to know about it?

i just hope they have not made an update that prevents this

thanks again

So you want to do clean install of Win 7 to check it out first?

If so, you can install any versions of Win 7 and dont enter the keys during the initial setup...you can bypass this step. For Ult. version, you have 30 days before you have to activate. For Enterprise, you have 3 days.

Of course you can install the upgrade, just install a previous versions of windows first. Like XP or Vista and use the upgrade disc.

I get the impression that you can do either, but I don't know any more than it states on their website. Wouldn't it be easier to just grab a copy from this site for free?

I know with XP you could do a full install form an "upgrade" disk, not sure if they changed this with W7. Of course MS wouldn't advertise this because then no one would pay the extra money for the "full" version.

Yes you need to load within Vista, then it gives you a choice to upgrade keeping your files intact, or a clean install.

No it's not possible with the upgrade disc - at least it wasn't with the disc that I had. You need Vista on the computer first.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes I am looking to try this from a dl here first but I am looking for a same exact ISO as the regular upgrade disc for windows 7 64-bit (preferably ultimate)

is there an upgrade disc download on this site where i can try this out first. but i need the dl ISO to be the exat same thing. no MSDN or partner version. a simple ISO of the original windows 7 upgrade disc that sells in stores for end-users.

many thanks again

many thanks again fr the links and help but i am looking for a download to try out of the windows 7 upgrade disc using an ugrade cdkey

i need to try this so i can see if the upgrade works using the disc boot method on a new hard drive, without having to have a previous installation of windows

thanks

update - i appreciate the help and i know there are ways within regedit to complete the upgrade version as a retail installation, but i like to see if i can get it working as a clean install using the upgrade dvd without all this HKEY editing

thanks again
