Consider that i have a full HD1080p television(I dont have a plasma or LCD.. i just have a normal 21" TV..)

Have you got a TV out card or a decent video card.
I use a DVI - HDMI cable from my PC to T.V. to play films etc.
I'm not sure what hardware would play mvk files directly but you can convert them to DVD or other file formats with certain software.
I'm not sure what to recommend, Super(C) is a great freeware video converter. Quite user friendly compared to the rest, but still takes some trial & error with settings.
Hope I helped.

so you have a hd1080p tube tv?
and a ps3 or xbox 360 can work, but you have to switch the mux the mkv container format to an mp4 and down-convert the audio to 2 ch.

there are also a number of other multimedia centers capable of playing mkv..

Well you could get a HD DVD Player.
I recommend using a DVI - HDMI cable as XanLoves and then play it through a PC.
You could also invest in a proper media center dedicated to your sound and video system.

to be honest, if you have a 21" 4:3 CRT, get a Divx compliant DVD player, like a Philips DVP5140:

and download the 700mb rips. On a TV that size at that resolution a 1080p .mkv is overkill on a biblical scale.

So, in order to play HD movies, I'll need an HD movie disc as well as an HDI cable connecting from pc to TV right?

PS: mkv format IS HD right? Total noob here :P

Well, no, if you're playing an HD rip from your PC, generally you play a file, not a disk, via DVI or HDMI to your HDMI input of your TV. Bear in mind that if you go from DVI to HDMI as I do, you'll need to deal with the audio signal some other way as DVI doesn't carry audio. So I use my soundcard's S/PDIF (Sony/Philips Digital InterFace or Sony/Philips Digital Interface Format, depending on whom you are speaking to) output to my receiver's digital coax input.

mvk is not necessarily HD.
There are way too man types of codec / file container combinations to be sure when you just give the file extension. If you know how long the movie is and what the file size is someone could make an educated guess as to what the quality is like.

There have been a lot acronyms and specilised phrases here that I would assume a noob might get a bit confused with.

A good reference point is howstuffworks (dot) com. Anything you dont understand they should explain in a simple enough manner.

Here is a good article on the different cables just discussed:

Yes, as XanLoves said, an .mkv is simply a container.

Here's a definition from the EXCELLENT Afterdawn website, which, by the way, is a mine of information. This page has a clickable list on the right. Anything and everything is listed there.
