Default How to play a 3D movie on a 2D system?

I have a documentary that is 3D. My WD Live won't play it at all and when I try to play it with VLC on my computer, it shows the picture twice, side by side. Plus, decoding it twice is taking a toll on video performance.

I have looked on many sites for a way to either play it or convert it to 2D. Has anyone had this problem and have you had any luck with viewing it as 2D?

This discussion gives a couple of different ways of viewing SBS as 2D in VLC player:

Basically either using the wall filter with 2 rows and 1 column, or using the crop filter and a custom aspect ratio to stretch it back again.

Hope this helps! :)

owaing, thanks for the link. I modified the command line to work for a PC and it did play it without the second picture, but it also added a large green area below the picture.

Playing around with VLC, I found a way to make it work. I went to Tools > Effects And Filters > Video Effects > Crop. From there, I cropped off 1920 from the right. This played the video correctly, but the motion was too jerky. I think I will see if I can find a video editor and manually crop 1920 pixels off one side.

Thanks again for your help.

Or you could find a link for that documentary in 2d format.

Virtualdub works for cropping regular AVI (DV); I haven't tried it with high-res content, though.

Have you tried any other players, like Media Player Classic, Kmplayer, Total Media Player, WindDVD, PowerDVD? You can't be the first person to have that issue, and it's something that should be easy to implement in the player software.

I haven't found this particular title in 2D. However, I ran it through Handbrake and cropped of 1920 pixels off the right side and ended up with a perfect 1920x1080 picture (the original picture was 3840x1080). The picture quality came out perfect. Now I know that's a good way to work with a 3D video on a 2D system. Plus, it chopped the size down from 7.5GB to 1.7GB with no visible loss in quality.

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.
