Dubs or subs

I prefer subs. The atmosphere is just better with "original" voices. And I dont want to forget the japanese I learned and keep practicing it

I know I'm a bit late to this party, but for me it really depends on the series and whether I saw it subbed or dubbed first. Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, and Lupin III I have to watch dubbed, I just can't wrap my head around the Japanese voices. For almost everything else, even when I buy new anime, I prefer subtitles, for most of the reasons that have already been listed above. Primarily most anime just do not get very good English dubs, Naruto is a perfect example. It's also really nice picking up new Japanese words and phrases while watching subbed, can't do that with dubs :D

I prefer Anime subbed because in the most dubbed versions, the sound and the video doesn't match :D

I prefer dubs. Personally I think preferring your own spoken language is a no-brainer. I don't mind subtitles, especially if I don't really have a choice, but I do make it a point to watch the dubbed versions of anime when available because I speak English and prefer to understand what I'm watching without having to read words on the bottom of my screen.

I never really understood the stigma of watching dubbed anime. I've watched both Japanese and English dubbed anime and I don't think either one is better than the other. Although I hate dubbed anime where the voice actors clearly don't know how to pronounce Japanese words and names. Like the old Samurai X dub (before it was re-dubbed and renamed Rurouni Kenshin) where Kenshin's Hiten Mitsurugi sword style was constantly pronounced "Hidden Mitserugee" and they kept calling him "Bat-two-sai" instead of correctly pronouncing Bah-toh-sai (Battousai). I especially hated hearing Kenshin continuously calling Sanosuke "Sano-suki". In cases like that I get annoyed with dubs.

Well as long as you're not used to spoken Japanese you might not hear the difference that much, but the overall difference(in all older and currently still airing anime) in quality between the original VA and the Dub is gigantic. And when you are a fan of a certain series you can start being protective of that series and act out against all negative changes to the show.

I'm one of those people, I think dubbing actually hurts the western anime/manga industry. There are just way too many changes I could never accept, such as censorship in both the art and the translation. Character/location name changes are absolutely terrible and even the translation of trademark Japanese words in certain series is something I don't like.

So for me, it's mostly RAW or Japanese subs. I personally can't even stand 9 out of 10 fansubs, so if I want to watch something with English subs, I'd have to pre-edit subs before watching, take notes while watching and re-edit after watching. Yes, I'm that annoyed by sub standard subbing and translation choices.

I've always preferred Japanese dub with English sub, even when I first started out. I suppose if I stuck with the Japanese dub & sub all throughout, I could understand it by now.

I'm taking Japanese classes and I'm gearing up for JPLT N5. While I still watch Japanese dub with English sub, I'm starting to connect the words I'm reading with the words I'm hearing. There's so much more you can learn from the original dubs, which is lost in the translation, IMO.

It's not really that I'm not used to spoken Japanese. I'm 24 now and I've been watching anime since I was about 11. At one point I remember having this Japanese channel that showed Dragon Ball Z at 1AM with no subtitles and I used to watch it anyway because it was as far as the Majin Buu saga when Toonami was just starting to cover Future Trunks and Mecha Frieza. It's really just a matter of preference and familiarity; I speak English and I prefer what I watch to be in English if possible.

I do definitely agree that the quality of most dubbed anime isn't at its best due to censorship of both language and art, and I'll also point out the fact that story elements tend to get lost in translation, inadvertently leading to inexplicable plot-holes. But for me, it's a give-and-take relationship: I get to view the anime of my choice in my spoken language, but at the risk of poor translations (ie: Raditz claiming Planet Vegeta was destroyed 3 years prior to him standing before Goku on Earth). I also watch most of the same anime subtitled, usually before it is dubbed. And that's also a give-and-take relationship in which I'm given a better understanding of the story and certain scenes not being edited/censored, but I have to deal with reading subtitles like I'm reading a moving manga and I occasionally deal with annoying voices such as a woman with a high-pitched voice screaming "Kamehameha" at the top of her lungs. In the end I don't think either is better in my own personal opinion.

I normally don't mind whether they're subs or dubs. Occasionally late at night when I'm really tired (and don't feel like reading) I prefer dubs. Other than that I find subs to be just fine. So long as the video quality's decent and the story's the same, I don't care. :p

i cant believe sailormoon is coming backkkkk i really hope they will do english subs for ove r here and not dub it. cant wait for summer 2013
