Default Modern Classics

We all know plenty of anime classics that are a landmark in anime industry such as Cowboy Bebop or Ghost in the Shell, and a lot others. But as you might have noticed some new/modern anime can be called so. So what new anime do you think can have the title "Modern Classic"? You don't necessarily have to like them much, but seeing how most fans like them, or how popular are they(excluding Naruto, Bleach, DBZ, etc. as those got popular, I think, due to their never-ending number of episodes).

Mine would be
-Code Geass
-Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
-Death Note

Maybe there are others but can't recall them right now.

Haruhi could be included, but didn't watch it so it didn't come in my mind.

As for Lucky star, and Mushishi, I'm not quite sure if they should be or not.
I haven't watched Lucky Star, but there isn't much hype over it, and it isn't really so highly regarded by fans.

As for Mushishi, it's for sure an amazing anime, and is my favorite BTW. But I don't see a lot of people watched this, and is not so popular.

Something that came to my mind is Samurai Champloo, Fullmetal Alchemist and Elfen Lied. Didn't watch Elfen Lied nor FMA though.

Maybe I missed out something Important, what year is the minimum to calling it "Modern"? 2003/4/5? What you think guyz? I personally think it should be around 2003-2004 onwards.

mmm, okay, I didn't watch CODE GEASS so I don't know about it. Well I watched the first episode, but I was not interested at all, I wonder what's so great about this anime; maybe I should have watched at least a few more episodes

I completely disagree with you, I think there's been quite a lot of a fandom for LUCKY STAR and HARUHI - have not seen the latter, yet, but the anime jumped to my mind when I read your topic (and I'm sure I'm gonna soooo disappointed when I actually watch it because I might expect too much...)
on the other hand, those two animes are aimed at people who know the anime scene, you know, with lotsa references and stuff...

SAMOURAI CHAMPLOO/COWBOY BE-BOP, yes, absolutely "modern classics" (didn't enjoy Cowboy Bebop, though)

MUSHISHI, not that popular, true, but how could it NOT be a modern classic, heh? I mean, Mushishi, come on, I'm sure I love this series as much as you do, I'm even trying to postpone the next time I will watch it because I know how great it is and I want to be as stunned as the first time I saw it
I'm longing for the live action movie by Otomo, by the way, did you see it?

I loved ELFEN LIED, but is it really a modern classic, I mean, on the same level as those Gurren Lagann and Mushishi and Samourai Champloo?

I also wondered about the point in time for "modern".
why not 21st century onwards? it only add two more years, and there's about 2,5years til the end of the first decade of the 21st century, boy!
eheh

okay, so we between the two of us we have at least 5 anime series that could win the "modern classic" award
what else?

MONSTER was a huuuuge kick in the face too, but I'm not sure it's been made after 2001... yay, 2004 and 2005, we have another nominee, i guess

I consider Elfen lied a classic, it's one of the most popular animes, lol, at least with my friends.
Death note deserves to be a classic, it is a master-piece.

To be honest, for an anime to be considered a classic it will need to be showed in cartoon network. For example, here in Mexico, we consider as classics Dragon ball series and Ranma 1/2. They were showed in a local channel, everyone, even anime haters know and most of them like these animes.

And I will love to say higurashi no naku koro ni, but i think it does not have a lot of fame in north america.

If a lot people agrees I think Mushishi can be considered classic then.

I think we shouldn't go as early as 2001 it's no longer modern if you ask me. I think 5 years back is OK so 2003-2004 onwards.

It definitely was a huge kick and made in 2004-1005, but I think even less people know about it than Mushishi. So i dunno really

It's quite popular, and very good as people say(didn't watch myself) so I think it's quite right to include it. But still not sure, as it isn't really that popular.

is "popularity" really a good factor in the choice of a modern classic?

because if Monster and Mushishi are not popular, as you said, then they don't deserve to be modern classics
which would be so unfair

I guess that's quite true, but wouldn't we have way too much anime that can receive this title.

I think we can't really have a fixed definition on what would we call classics

meh, a classic would be an anime that is regularly referred to as real quality stuff, you know
something to pave the way for even better series/movies in the future
also, a classic should be peculiar, unique (Mushishi is quite unique by itself, Gurren Lagann is a new take on mecha animes, Monster and Death Note are two of the most recent series that redefines the suspense/whodunnit/detective/serial killer genres - uh sorry my english is not good enough for me to express my feelings acurately, but hey I'm trying, please bear with me)

being good, funny or popular is not enough, a classic has to have this little spark of creative genius other shows lack

Darker Than Black? haven't watched it yet, but I really want to
I guess it might be a very good series, but is Darker Than Black one of the first top-notch anime that jumps to your mind when you try to figure out what are the 3 or 5 best anime you've seen in the last 4 or 5 years?
