Default Ouya to bolster launch games with NES, SNES, N64 emulation

Ouya, the open-source game console running Android, has come under fire for the look and feel of the games demonstrated so far on the system. Ars's own Florence Ion talked last month with several developers currently involved with Ouya launch titles, and while they were clearly enthusiastic about the promise of developing for an open system, the games themselves so far lack—well, a bit of polish.

A console typically lives and dies by its launch titles (see the unfortunate Sega Saturn), but Ouya now has the opportunity to stand directly on the shoulders of giants with its initial content offerings. According to Ed Krassenstein, the Ouya forum administrator, Ouya will launch with NES, SNES, and Nintendo64 emulators available (hat tip to TechCrunch). NES emulation will be provided by EMUya, SNES emulation will be via SuperGNES, and N64 emulation will be via Mupen64Plus.

exactly. i love my android tablet, but the games just arent anywhere near as good as a proper console or pc. plus most decent tablets have hdmi out anyway. so all thts really needed is a decent controller.

Information Ouya Lags Behind Smartphones in Benchmarks

Results of recent benchmark tests reveal that Ouya is not at all up to the mark and there are over 70 other mobile devices that have performed better than the gaming console.

Currently shipping only to developers who had signed up and customers who had pre-ordered the gaming console, Ouya isn’t expected to launch for general masses up until summer. From the looks of the benchmark test results those who are waiting for the console to go public should rather go for a high end smartphone or another gaming console if budget is not a constraint as Ouya is seemingly not just worth it.

The android based gaming console packs a NVIDIA Tegra 3 System-on-Chip (SoC) and the quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor is clocked at 1.7GHz while for the graphics it has NVIDIA GeForce ULP. We all know that Tegra 4 is a lot faster than the Tegra 3 and even the Snapdragon 800 both in terms of processing and graphics and packs an A15 SoC, which is proven to be highly superior to the A9 on multiple occasions. We believe having a Tegra 3 is just so old-school for a gaming platform – it’s like powering a new PC with Intel Dual Core processors even when Core 2 Duo processors have already been released.

Futuremark, which is known for its benchmarks like 3DMark and PCMark, has performed benchmarking on mobile devices and Ouya has been ranked at a sad 73rd position. There are smartphones Samsung Galaxy S II plus and Galaxy Grand that have performed better than Ouya. The devices that have made it to the top of the benchmark results are all powered by Qualcomm processors with Adreno 320 graphics. Individual score for Ouya can be found here:

Dissapointing that it isn't faster but I'm not sure it needs it. Not yet at least. My old milestone 2 could blitz any game on the market. Tegra 3 is considerably faster.

The whole open source myth seems to be gone too. Ouya just seems more underwhelming with every minute. Just hope this wont have negative effects on the kickstarter hype.

At least Nvidia seems to be doing almost everything perfect with Project Shield.
