Controller New USB won't work on Wii

I bought a new USB, Verbatim.
I'm using Wii Backup Manager.
I followed the same process before with my old USB: format it to FAT32 & make a wbfs folder then add the games on it.
When I tried to load the USB on Wii, it got stucked. CFG won't load. I have to unplug the Wii since I can't navigate the whole thing. Nor do turning on and off work.
Am I doing something wrong? Is this an effect of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword game? It's one of the games I added on the new USB.
I also tried to do it with other games and still same prob.
Or is it the USB itself that is not compatible.

Any help is appreciated. TIA

Compatibility can be a bit touchy with USB Loader but from what I see all of the Verbatim USB devices that HAVE been tested have all worked so it doesn't seem likely that would be the problem. Have you tested any particular rips with your previous *known* working usb device? Skyward Sword has been tested to work with USB Loader so that shouldn't be the issue UNLESS it's a bad rip...

You can try these solutions that are on the compaibility tables:

If Problems occur:

1. Try to plug the Device at the other USB-Port.

2. Try to plug the Device in before entering/in Homebrewchannel. Then load App.

3.Try to plug in the Device and then power on Wii.

If the Device does not work

1. Try to find a spare Device that will show up.

2. Use this to boot the loader.

3. Once you have the "No partition found" screen, switch to the original Device.

4. Press A. Hopefully, the device will show up on the screen to be formatted.

5. If it works, on following loads, you will still need to swap. Instead of formatting every time, press A, then B to go back.

I use a Verbatim HDD, and works fine. I'm guessing you have CFG installed as a FORWARDER channel and requires the appropriate boot.dol etc files in the app folder. If you used ModMii, in the folder it downloads the files to, there should be:

COPY TO SD...and
COPY TO USB

...do as it says on the tin and copy the files in the "COPY TO USB" folder to the HDD. If you didn't use ModMii, check the official CFG page here:

http://code.google.com/p/cfg-loader/downloads/list
...and get the forwarder files that go in the 'apps' folder on the USB HDD.

I had this same problem with my new HDD MyPassport. I start NeoGamma r9 unplug the HDD from the usb start WBFS HDD in NeoGamma when it starts looking I plug my HDD back in and it recognizes all the games and the HDD. Kinda annoying, but this is the work around that I found to work 98% of the time. I think the problem is that the Wii Doesn't "understand" USB 3.0 and so has a problem loading any HDDs that use a USB 3.0 setup. If it doesn't help then I would suggest another HDD. Hope it helps.

I can confirm USB 3.0 works for the Wii, my Verbatim drive is so.

here is the solution... at least this worked for me....

1. Go to Administrative tools in Control Panel
2. Go to Computer Management
3. Select Disk Management under the Storage tab in the left panel
4. Select your the hard drive you wish to format for the Wii and delete whatever partition is on it.
5. Windows may now detect the drive and tell you it is inaccessible and you should format it... DON'T... LEAVE IT RAW!!!
6. Open WBSF manager 3.0 or whatever the updated version is
7. Select your Drive (the one you want to format for Wii) and format it...
8. Tranfer games using wbfs manager 3.0...

NOTE: whenever Windows asks to format the drive... DON'T FORMAT THROUGH WINDOWS.... go into WBFS Manager 3.0 and access your drive by selecting it and clicking LOAD

I used to have a WBFS file system on the HDD too like the poster above. Worked fine as long I had it but I was missing out.

Having FAT32 lets you do so much more, you can trasfer the games to it as .wbfs extensions (automatically scrubbed file size) and put all your forwarder channels, WiiWare/Virtual console games etc. (playable through 'Mighty Channels') all on the HDD. If you have a WBFS file system you're limited to putting your games ONLY on (inaccessible without WBFS Manager). FAT32 means Windows can 'see' whats on the drive, so you can easily browse what you've got (if you set the game files to display as 'titles' instead of just the game ID code) and doesn't ask you to format everytime you load it. Also, you can download all the cover art for the games in CFG, and saves it all to the HDD (no SD necessary after modding).

Best way to set everything up for FAT32 is ModMii (google). Its very simple, the wizard asks you what you want and downloads all the files you need to mod.

...and want your Wii to have smart TV functions (albeit SD) like a media player, YouTube app, Shoutcast radio etc.? Get WiiMC, i find it rather good (though I use my smart TV for that type of thing). Happy modding.

(albeit SD)... 'standard def', not 'SD' card. But you can put your music/video files on an SD card to play through WiiMC if you want!

i've actually got my external wd passport partitioned... one partition is WBFS and the other is NTFS... and somehow my Wii reads both partitions... games are easily handled by the WBFS file system, so my various USB loaders work to read those fine... and my wii media player works to access the NTFS file system for movies... i'm not to sure what more you want your wii to do with your HD, but thats really all i need my wii to do

Personally, I hate the FAT32 file system's limitations... specifically file size... I still use my passport as an portable media for my larger than 4 gig files and so NTFS is ideal... FAT32 just isn't practical... but to each their own... find what works for you and work it

Agreed.

The Wii Backup Manager splits .wbfs games over 4GB into 2 files for a FAT32 drive, and I don't have a problem with that. I considered partitioning the Wii HDD back before I discovered ModMii, but I had a problem deciding how big I wanted each partition to be. With my 2TB FAT32 drive (full however), its just one partition and I had no need to plan a strategy ahead to fit the most stuff on it.

Since that drive is dedicated to Wii stuff only, my other files over 4GB (films etc.) are on a different drive (NTFS) plugged into a HD media player. If using the same drive for films, I know of no standard def (read 'Wii compatible') films coming close to the 4GB limit available on 'the scene'.

If a different method works for someone else, great! I'm happy with my setup, and just letting people know that you don't have to go 'WBFS' file system and potentially accidentally formatting the HDD when you plug it in to the PC.

Hi guys,

Thank you so much for all the help you have provided. I've tried all of it but unfortunately nothing worked. Maybe I'll just buy a new one.

Have you tried different versions of the cIOS. It's best to use the latest version of the cIOS for the best game compatibility, but if the usb hdd isn't recoginzed, then you may need to try a different cIOS. I had to use cIOS rev17 for the longest time because cIOS rev19, 20, and 21 would not work with my usb hdd. The latest is d2x cIOS and is a very compatible cIOS, that is what you should be using.

You mean the WADS? Based on my CFG, I'm using the latest one.

Default Wii hard drive issues

You did not mention the size of the drive or if it is powered or not.

I have encountered many issues with drives over 2TB being unusable with the Wii.
I have also encounter many issues with USB powered drives. Most of the new USB3 2.5" usb powered drives just draw more power than the Wii can give and won't work.

I usually use a Seagate GoFlex Desk 2TB USB3 drive.
