Default Softmod Wii 4.2u HELP! O_O

I have a Wii firmware version 4.2u and the serial number starts with LU10. I'm really scared that I might brick my wii because I will screw up during the softmodding process. I've searched it on google but i've had so much conflicting information such as "dont downgrade" and "do downgrade". I really want to be able to play wii and gamecube backups and homebrew games. If anyone could tell my step by step instructions on the safest way to softmod my 4.2u firmware wii. ( I have never tried to mod it before )
Thanks in advance

Ok first of all my friend....the thing that causes your wii to brick is if you have less than 50 blocks free...this is what bricks it! Go here:
http://www.mikeandheth.com
 or
http://wiihacks.com
go to mikeandheth`s page and they give you step by step. If this dont help then next best thing is youtube and type in search how to softmod 4.2u. I have seen that its on there. Good Luck

Please remember to code tag any external links, an easy way is to highlight your links and press the "#" button on the toolbar.
Or you can manually type in the code tags... [code]Links[/code]
[url] tags need to be removed as they make the links live (clickable) and they do not display correctly
The insert link option on the toolbar is only for internal links (ie on this site)

First off, I am not responsible for anything that may result in system failure or Bricks to your Wii. Use at your own risk!!!! But this is what I did step by step

1st we need to get the Homebrew Channel and a few other things Installed. Just Download This, unrar and place the private folder and the boot.elf file to the root of your empty sd card formatted to FAT32
http://www.4shared.com/file/140287606/4a55b15d/1st_Homebrew_Chan.html
Then go to your wii, and place the card in the SD slot and navigate to the SD card icon,in the bottom left and press A, a warning screen about scams should appear for a few Seconds, press ok,"If not goto Wii,data management, channels and click sd on the top of your screen". The screen will go black. A disclaimer shall appear, press one to continue. Now three lines should appear: Homebrew channel, which can be installed, DVDx, also can be installed, and Bootmii. Install the Homebrew Channel First, then DVDX, then bootmii, When you select bootmii select prepare Sd 1st, after its done move up to install BootMii as IOS and press A, let it finish then exit you should now have the homebrew channel on your Wii system menu, and DVDx and BootMii installed as an IOS.

Now to get rid of the evil ios249, download this
http://www.4shared.com/file/140287685/1b856aef/2nd_Uninstall_stub_ios36_inc.html
If you get errors with the above link use this One
http://www.4shared.com/file/141232574/f253278/To_Remove_IOS36.html
Place the contents of this folder to the root of you SD card (only these contents should be in the SD root, everything else that you want to keep must be backed up to your PC) Now take the Sd and place it back in the Wii start HBC and press home at the main Homebrew Channel screen, Select bootmii and wait. Wadmanager should start. When it does move up to and press left until you see ios36 then Select SD card and press A to continue, after this Select ios249 from wad folder and press A and change the action to "uninstall wad", and press A. Take a deep breath, you are almost done.

Now the installation of cios249rev14 download this
http://www.4shared.com/file/140287891/f6db2bd/3rd_Install_cios249_ios36_inc.html
Place the contents once more to the root of you empty SD and then take it to your Wii Place the SD card in the wii, start HBC and press home at the main HBC screen and select BootMii and wait. At the beginning you should see ios249 highlighted. Keep pressing left on the wii pad until you see "Do not reload IOS" at the ios select screen, press A. If you have internet connection, select "Network install",If not select "SD card"and Press A. and Proceed with the installation. You should now have ios249rev14 installed, which will allow you to run any Backup loader or USB laoder!

Now to get your backup loaders installed, and this will be the last Step, just download this
http://www.4shared.com/file/140288433/4af5d229/4th_Backup_Loaders.html
Place both the apps and the wad folder to the root of your empty sd card and then to the Wii we go for the last time, Place the SD in wii and boot up, open the Homebrew channel and choose WADManagerv1.4, once loaded choose NeoGammaR7.wad "FOR DVD BACKUPS"and follow directions on screen to install. For Usbloading choose USB_Loader_GX-UNLR-r688.wad "For USB HARDRIVE LOADING" and follow on screen instructions to install.

You are now softmodded and ready to play backups on your 4.2u Wii. Hope it helps

Ok, so I assume you have the homebrew channel installed right? if so place a backup copy of any wii game in the wii drive and open the homebrew channel with the files from the last step on your sd and scroll down to neogamma and press A, and try it that way. If this does not work then steps 2 or 3 were not finished completely. What did it say on the screen when you installed cios249rev14 in step 3?

Hi I've been trying to use your system and had the same problem with the black screen. I retraced my steps and in step 2 the following appeared which I doubt is correct:

[+] Uninstalling WAD, Please wait ...
>> Deleting Tickets ... ERROR! (ret = - 1017)
>> Deleting title contents... ERROR! (ret = - 1017)
>> Deleting title... ERROR! (ret = - 1017)

Then it asks me to press any button to continue.

In Step 3 I get an error

[+] Installing Custom IOS, Please wait...
>> Install ERROR! (ret = - 2011)

What do you think the problem might be?

Thanks.

bigstump, I must say that your post was freaking fantastic. I registered on the forum just to see the links and after literally 7 hours of fiddling with various wads managers, cios files, etc, all it took to solve my problems was a few minutes and a comprehensive set of instructions along with 4-5 premade batches of files. I was even running into the extra ios uninstall errors and the additional link you posted managed to get through those, too.

Now everything works flawlessly. A+
