Different Wii games use different Wii IOS's. The Backup Loaders use IOS 249 if I'm not mistaken.

ios249 rev 8 works fine for me. You want a backup loader with 002 fix (fixes games like MadWorld and Guitar Hero Smash Hits so they work :))

I think I have IOS 249 installed on my softmodded wii (4.0E) and backups etc. all appear to be working fine (so far at least). I also have CIOS installed (rev 12 I think).

Is there an app I can run on the wii which will report the software versions which are loaded / running cause it is all a bit confusing now to try and remember what versions of what are installed.

I have softmodding several wii systems, and I always install cios38 rev 17 (ios 249)
Of course, each ios has a different purpose, so the best ios would depend on what you use your wii for.

ios 249 has the highest compatibility, and is the most widely used. Ios 249 is constantly being re-coded and re-released as different revs. There are currently 20, and number 21 is on the way (if it's not already out, not too sure about this).

I used ios249 rev 14 for a long time, but there is an annoying bug with DL (dual layer) discs with this rev, so I couldn't play SSBB. I switched to ios249 rev 17 and haven't had any problems with this, (I switched so I could play metroid: other m, as it is a DL game).

Hermes ios222/223/224 (224 was added with the 5th version I believe) is the best ios for games like karaoke, guitar hero, and rock band (I believe I also use one of those to load Monster Hunters Tri). Basically, any normal game should be run with ios249, and any game that requires a usb port use hermes ios.

So, to summarize, I use ios249 rev 17 for the majority of my games, and they all work like a charm
I use hermes ios 222/223 v4 for guitar hero, karaoke, and rock band.

When installing hermes ios I would recommend using ios 222 with ios38, and installing ios 223 with ios38 merged with 37. (223 is mainly used for guitar hero 5). [That is my recommendation for installing hermes ios v4, i have no experience with using v5 or 5.1.]

Edit: (additional info) I currently have 138 games on my HDD, and every single one of them works perfectly. In addition, usb loader gx recommends using ios249 rev 17 for their software. Hopefully this will invoke some confidence in your choice of ios if you decide to switch. This website is great for finding all your wii softmodding needs:

best of luck!

@bwaite87
code your link

I'm sticking with Ios 249 rev 9.
DL support and plays all games without a problem, yes even metroid other M.
I know it doesn't have sd-hc compatibility, other revs do but they've got bugs in parts I use.

Hermes 222 & 223 rev 4.
rev 5 is buggy
rev 5.1 is a bit better but I got all i need with rev 4

CMios rev4
For Gamecube backups

I have also softmodded a few Wii's. All my Wii's get configurable usb loader installed, for best compatibility. And neogamma for gamecube games.

IOS249 rev17
IOS202 v5 as IOS60
IOS222 v4 as IOS38
IOS223 v4 as IOS38 merged with IOS37
cMIOS v4

works flawlessly
