Film Gungrave (Anime)

Gungrave (ガングレイヴ, Gungrave) is an anime adaption of the third-person shooter video game created by Sega with original characters designed by Yasuhiro Nightow.

In 2003, an anime television series was created based on the Gungrave PlayStation 2 video game. The story expands on the universe created in the first game, and follows the lives of Brandon Heat (also known as "Beyond the Grave" or simply just, "Grave") and his friend Harry MacDowell as they rise through the ranks of the criminal organization, "Millenion". The series involves many of the same characters, and seiyū (voice actors) found in the original game.

It was produced by anime studio Madhouse, and included many of the same staff involved with the game and creator Yasuhiro Nightow’s other notable series, Trigun.

The anime began broadcasting in Japan on October 6, 2003 on TV Tokyo and ended on March 29 2004, running for 26 episodes. In the U.S. it aired periodically on G4 and on Anime Unleashed, originally debuting in October 2004.

The first half of the series (if one doesn’t count the first episode) explores the relationship of a young Brandon Heat and Harry MacDowell, twenty-five years before the start of the original game. The primary story follows the pair of small-time criminals entering the big-league, a syndicate known as Millenion. The group emphasizes loyalty among its members, but Brandon and Harry’s strong relationship is disrupted by Harry’s lust for power and his desire to get to the top with his friend so he can accomplish his goal: To get what he wants, when he wants. Secondary to the main story is that of the relationship between Brandon and his love interest, Maria. It also reveals why Brandon and Maria's relation did not go any further. The reason was that Brandon felt so ashamed was in how he had to get close to the woman that he loved. He had to work for Millennion to get close. Due to this, Brandon felt that he could not be worthy to love her because he felt that he had sinned too greatly during his profession as an assassin. With that and the realization that Big Daddy was also in love with her (as much as a Father loves a daughter), Brandon had to play the hard way and told Big Daddy to go and confess to Maria.

Also in these early episodes, Brandon struggles to decide who is more important to him; his true love, the Millennion organization, or his best friend. This first half also introduces the reasons behind the death and resurrection of Brandon Heat as and how Harry MacDowell becomes “Bloody” Harry. It also introduces the group that Harry organized and how they got the necrolyzation technique from Dr. T. This technique was found when a rival gang, The Lightnings get Blood War, a member from the Volcanos to join the group with his men and create another fight against Millennion in the hope that they will take over the organization for revenge for an incident earlier in the show. In the end, Blood War and the Lightening's leader, Cannon Vulcan, who happens to Balladbird Lee's brother die. When Harry and Lee find out about the necrolyzation process, Harry continues it under his initiative. This is going to be a trump card for him later on in the series as with this research will lead to the discovery of the 'Superior' process in which that a living body is altered, not a dead one.

The second half of the series picks up thirteen years after Brandon's death, when he is revived by Dr. T to protect Maria's daughter Mika, and exact revenge on the Millennion Organization by stopping Harry's ambitions. This portion of the story follows the vein of the original game, and expands on characters and events to add to that story. It also introduces some new characters to the storyline, as well as slightly alter the events from that of the game it is based upon. Characters are also revealed to have changed in one way or another as well.

Also in the second half, we see Brandon becoming more extrovert due to the presence of Mika and overtime Mika falls in love with Brandon, wanting him to leave his past behind him and Millenion. He however does not and makes peace with his former friend before fighting to the end with. It is also revealed why Brandon does not kill Harry when he had a chance: Brandon could never kill his best friend as he cared for him too much. In the end, Harry and Brandon exchange farewells and shoot each other in a suicide pact instead of dying at the hands of Millenion agents.
