Yes, you need to have finished book 1 (& still have the save) to play book 2.
Same thing will happen when they release the third, fourth & fifth book, you will need to have played the previous books (1+2 > 3, 1+2+3 > 4, 1+2+3+4 > 5)

Yeah your decisions in the previous books will affect how next book players. To give a very very minor spoiler example (hopefully hidden, highlight to see) you indirectly choose career in book 1, you play this in book 1 but it will obviously come up again in book 2 and probably other books, clearly if you haven't made this choice, book 2 doesn't work.
