The Oxford Genie
![]() In Windows 98, 2000, NT 4.0, ME and XP you can use the Oxford Genie in: * Internet Explorer 4, 5, 5.5 and 6 * Microsoft Word 97, Word 2000, and Word XP * Netscape Navigator 4 and 6 * Adobe Acrobat Reader 4 and 5 To look up a word in Internet Explorer, just point at it with your mouse. To look up a word in Netscape Navigator, double-click on any word to highlight it, then press the Ctrl key. To look up a word in Acrobat Reader, you will need to first select the text input option by clicking on the T icon. You should only need to do this once in any document. Then click on any word to highlight it, and press the Ctrl key. MS Word To look up a word in Word 97, click on a word and then move the cursor away slightly. To look up a word in Word 2000 or Word XP, just point at it with your mouse If you are working in Word and you want to look up a word or phrase you have just typed, then hold down the left-hand Shift key, tap the right-hand Shift key, and then release both keys. This will insert the word to the left of the flashing vertical bar into the Genie search window. To move around the Genie window, you can use the Tab key. With Internet e-mail systems like hotmail, you will be able to use the Genie in the same way in e-mail as in the normal browser. Other e-mail systems will respond in different ways, either by clicking or by pointing, depending on the system. You may need to choose Word as your default e-mail editor. In MS Outlook 2000 you will be able to select words by simply pointing at them in e-mails that you are sending, forwarding, or answering. You will need to select Word as your default editor for e-mails. You can do this by finding Options under the Tools menu, in MS Outlook 2000, then choosing the tab marked Mail format, then choosing Microsoft Word. You should choose to send e-mails in HTML format. Intelligent look-up The Genie software uses clues in the text to decide which words and phrases it should show you first. It can usually identify phrasal verbs and idioms straight away, and show you their definitions. If there are not enough clues in the text, it may need to show you more than one word. In these cases, the words appear in an index window. You can easily choose the right word by clicking on it. Keyboard shortcuts If the intelligent look-up finds a phrase, e.g. rite of passage, and you want to look up the word rite n, then just hold down the Ctrl key. Sound Click on the loudspeaker icon to play the sound. The American pronunciation is given when it differs from British pronunciation. Please remember You can always look up a word by typing it into the text input box. You cannot look up words in Web browsers that are inside graphics. You cannot look up words in Web browsers until the whole page has loaded. When the dictionary entries open, some information is hidden. To display the examples and other information, click on the + symbol. Clicking on a word in a definition or example looks up that word for you. Further information If you have any other questions, then you will find helpful information on the Oxford Unversity Press Web site at: www.oup.com/elt/multimedia/. We hope you enjoy using this software and find it useful. ![]()
