Shih Yen-ko, an eccentric swordsman (Wang Li), has vowed to kill any
evil-doers on "Judgment Day" every three years, except for those
whose clan chief stands forward on their behalf. He issues an edict
entitling its finder to one favor. A young stranger Shih Chung-chien,
nicknamed Son of a Bitch (Kuo Chue) acquires the edict by chance, but
Shih snatches it back and teaches him a fatal type of kung fu with the
intention of its killing him.
Meanwhile, Shih Chung-yu (Kuo Chue) is fleeing his Hsueh Shan clanmates
after committing rape. His parents Shih Ching and Min Ju vow to deliver
him up for punishment, not knowing he is now the Chief of the Chang Lo
Clan. With Chung-yu missing, Chang Lo Clan head plots to have the
insane Chung-chien, who resembles Chung-yu, pose as their Chief to avert
Shih's massacre. Chung-chien is later palmed by a Hsueh Shan man who
mistakes him for Chung-yu, but Chung-chien, dying of Shih's fatal kung fu
instruction, revives and instead becomes a sophisticated martial artist.
A girl named Ting Tang (Candy Wen Hsueh-erh) is also deceived and claims
to be his fiancee, and her grandpa Ting San (Yang Chi-ching) insists on
their getting married.
But Chung-chien is needed by Chang Lo Clan to go back to pose as Chief.
Chung-chien is forced to face Shih and fight him on behalf of the clan.
Eventually his true identity is discovered and traced back to his
abduction as a baby.

Yang Tsung-pao is killed while fighting invaders from West Hsia. Members
of the Yang clan are infuriated when Wang Ching, a cunning prime minister
of the Sung Dynasty who is in control of the army, purposely delays a
counter-attack against the invaders. The Yang clan, led by Grandmother
She Tai-chun (Lisa Lu), band together to form their own army and leave
for the front. Meanwhile Wang Ching (Ching Miao) is passing information
to the invaders who, acting on this, plan to ambush the Yangs.
A Chinese general, Lu Chao, who escapes from the invaders, warns the
Yangs of the ambush, and they make their attack plans. The battle ends
with the defeat of the West Hsia troops – and the anger of their king,
who blames the defeat on Lu Chao (Yueh Hua). The Yangs are without food
and surrounded by the enemy, when the West Hsia king and his troops
launch a heavy attack. But the enemy is tricked, and the West Hsia king
orders his troops to retreat. Destroying roads and bridges as they go,
they are pursued by resourceful Yang warriors, who are later captured.
Tricked again, this time by General Lu Chao, the West Hsia king tries to
regroup his army, but in vain, for She Tai-chun and her troops cause a
great flood and much confusion, during which Lu Chao and his soldiers end
the final battle, driving the West Hsia invaders from Chinese soil.

The movie that started it all! The Shaw Brothers classic, The Flying Guillotine
introduced the moviegoing world to the most notorious weapon in martial arts
cinema history: the flying guillotine! Crafted by Xin Kang (Goo Fung) at the
behest of the Ching Emperor, the lethal killing device features retractable
razor-sharp blades hidden in a hat-like object which, when thrown onto a victim
via the connected chain, neatly decapitates the poor victim with a satisfying
metallic clang. Among the band of assassins trained to use the flying guillotine
is Ma Teng (Shaw Brothers regular Chan Koon Tai), who starts as the most talented
member of the gang, and ends up as the gang's ultimate quarry. He goes on the run
for two years with his girlfriend, but the two cannot elude the assassins forever.
Eventually the gang will catch up with their former member...and when they do,
heads undoubtedly will roll. Directed by Ho Meng Hua, The Flying Guillotine is a
solid martial arts tale that has reached cult status thanks to its titular device,
a creative killing machine whose existence would forever define martial arts
cinema for legions of fans! (yesasia.com)

The Ching emperor, Yung Cheng, is a brutal ruler, who organizes the “Flying Guillotine”
gang to eliminate opponents of his rule. One of the gang members, Ma Teng (Ti Lung)
deserts, in revulsion against the emperor’s cruelty, and the enraged monarch orders his
henchmen Suen Pao-ying (Lo Lieh) and Kang Chen-feng (Frankie Wei Hung) to catch the
deserter. Together with his wife and small son, Ma Tzu-hsiang, the deserter flees to
Ping Chiang City in South China, where he makes a living as a blacksmith. Ma Teng then
invents an iron umbrella, which can defeat the flying guillotine. Meantime, a wave of
anti-Ching movements sweep across South China, the campaign leaders of which include
Pai Tai-kung (Wang Chung), Kan Feng-chih (Shih Chung-tien) and a woman, Lu Szu-niang
(Yen Nan-hsi). These patriots secretly join forces with Na Lan (Shih Szu), the daughter
of an imperial officer, to assassinate the monarch; but their attempts repeatedly fail.
The patriots also try in vain to persuade Ma Teng to join them. Soon, the guillotine
gangsters track down Ma Teng in Ping Chiang City; he kills several of his pursuers, and
escapes, but his wife and child are slaughtered. Ma Teng then joins the anti-Ching forces
and, in a series of raids on the imperial palace, the patriots find to their dismay that
the fighting efficiency of the flying guillotine has been improved by a Tibetan Lama, and
that the iron umbrella is not a match for it. Na Lan and her women colleagues then steal
the blueprint for the “Ring-Chain Flying Guillotine”, the improved weapon, and are ready
to leave the palace with it when they are intercepted by the emperor’s men. Emperor
Yung Cheng suspects that Na Lan could be his enemy, and he orders her to kill her own
father in order to prove her loyalty to the throne. Na Lan finally takes her father’s
life though she quietly preserves his body. The cunning emperor then orders his gangsters
to kill her, but before they can harm her, Na Lan escapes to the hideout of the patriots.
By this time Ma Teng the blacksmith has invented a new weapon, called the ‘toothed wheel’
which can counteract the ring-chain flying guillotine. One night the patriots sneak into
the palace sleeping chamber to assassinate Yung Cheng. They clash with the palace guards
and the gangsters of the ring-chain flying guillotine unit. Ma Teng uses the toothed wheel
to defeat the ring-chain flying guillotine, and the patriots succeed in putting to death
Emperor Yung Cheng. However, Lu Szu-niang and many others amongst the fearless patriots are
also killed in the battle.

Yu Yu-wei (Patricia Ha Man-jik), a girl scholar in Chang An, becomes a
Taoist with her name changed to Hsuan Chi. Then, dissatisfied with life
there, she gives up taoism and gets popular by mixing with such famous
scholars as Li Shang-yin (Wei Chi-shun) and Wen Ting-kun (Kiang Tao).
She turns down many proposals, and develops a lesbian affair with her
maid Lu Chiao (Lin Kai-ling).
At a literary party, she strikes up an acquaintance with a roving
swordsman Tsui Po-hou (Alex Man Chi-leung) and they become attached to
each other. When her lover deserts her to continue his wandering life,
she returns to the temple. She is expelled after she processes a stimulant
and is caught in lesbianism.
She becomes notorious by moving into regions of singsong houses and
contracts an acquaintance with Taoist Yung (Pan Chen-wei) from a famous
Kansu family. Though a Platonist, Yung, seeing her intimacy with her maid
Lu, molests Lu in spite of himself.
While celebrating the winter festival with her scholar friends, Hsuan-chi
sees the influx of female refugees escaping from banditry and puts them up.
She holds parties for them every night and spends almost all her savings.
One night, a mob, led by bandit Chief Kung Meng-wu (Huang Shu-tang),
plunders Hsuan-chi’s home, and is wiped out by Po-hou and his friend Auyang
(Chang Kuo-chu) who comes to bring a pair of swords made for Hsuan-chi. The
flame of love rekindles between Hsuan-chi and her lover, and then Po-hou
leaves her again.
Hsuan-chi discovers Lu Chiao pregnant, and suspecting Po-hou to be responsible,
she forces her to abort it. When she refuses, Lu kills her and hides her body
in the garden. When the body is subsequently discovered, Yung, stung by
conscience, kills himself.
Hsuan-chi is sentenced to death, but refuses to flee at the execution ground
when her lover comes to her rescue. He is eventually overpowered by the
soldiers and the two lovers face execution together. Hsuan-chi emotionally
evokes memories of their love affair by humming a tune eulogizing true love
when Auyang suddenly arrives to chop off their heads to save them the agony
of execution.

Three of Shaw Brothers’ finest martial arts directors, who, between them, had made
more than a hundred classics, united for this unique anthology film. Yueh Feng
writes and directs a clever love-and-kung-fu triangle, Cheng Kang both writes and
directs kung-fu courtesans battling brigands, and the “godfather of the kung-fu film”
Chang Cheh, creates a cliff-hanging, swashbuckling mini-movie with maxi-action. It’s
three times the substance, style, skill, and stars in what truly stands as a motion
picture event.

The Ching Emperor fears the martial artists from the Shao Lin Monastery, and
so he gives orders to burn it down. Most of the inmates who resisted the
Manchus are either killed or dispersed. The lucky ones, who escape included
Hung Hsi-kuan, in addition to five men, who flee to Central China. They are
Tsai Te-chung (Ti Lung), Ma Chao-hsing (Alexander Fu Sheng), Fang Ta-hung
(Meng Fei), Li Shih-kai (Chi Kuan-chi), and Hu Te-ti (David Chiang). These
five heroes try to join forces with the other anti-Ching elements in Central
China. Among the Shao Lin men is Ma Fu-yi, a traitor, who in league with the
Manchu henchman, Chen Wen-yao (Chiang Tao), plots to destroy the Shao Lin
heroes once and for all. Ma Chao-hsing is captured by the traitor, but he
refuses to reveal anything.
Meanwhile, Hu Te-ti, with the help of Chieftain Kao, and the chieftain’s
followers, rush to the rescue of Ma Chao-hsing. A fierce battle ensues, and
Ma is freed, but the brave chieftain dies. The anti-Ching patriots begin to
realize that in order to lick the Manchu lackeys, led by Chen Wen-yao,
Pao Yu-lung, and others, they must improve their kung fu skill, because their
opponents are also experts in martial arts. Then the patriots return to the
gutted monastery, where they spend more than a year perfecting still more
kung fu techniques, such as the ‘Crossed Fists’, ‘Triple-Jointed Stick’,
‘Rolling Technique’, ‘Tiger Stork Technique’, and ‘Pole Technique’. The decisive
battle is fought, resulting in the complete routing of the Manchu gangsters. But
Fang and Li also die martyrs to liberty. The anti-Ching forces are further
reinforced by the arrival of fresh troops from Admiral Cheng Cheng-kung of Taiwan.
More bitter struggles against the Manchu tyrants follow....

Of the dozens of great martial arts movies made by this prolific and respected director,
this tale of legendary Shaolin avengers Fang Shih-yu and Hung Hsi-kuan is often considered
one of the best of Chang Cheh. His collaboration with equally renowned Kung-fu
choreographer Liu Chia-Liang was apparent in all the performances, but especially with that
of charismatic, capable, then 19-year-old Alexander Fu Sheng. This powerful production is a
true landmark in kung-fu film history.
The story starts on the second day after soldiers of the Ching government burned
down the Shao Lin Monastery.
Hung Hsi-kuan, one of Shao Lin’s disciples, survives the bloodshed. Though seriously
injured he manages to escape and runs toward Kwangtung.
Che Kang, a Ching general, knows the escape of Hung. He brings his deputy, Teh Hsiang,
hoodlums Mai Hsin and Hsiang Shao-hui, to track Hung down.
Hung is found by Mai Hsin and his men. And a fight between them starts.
Meanwhile, another disciple of Shao Lin, Fang Shih-yu, sees the fighting. He mistakes
Hung as a gangster and beats him up. Hung is finally arrested by the soldiers.
Hung is imprisoned secretly by the authority at the home of a rich man, Ho Chu-chen.
They torture Hung and try to make him tell where other Shao Lin disciples are. But no
matter how they torture him, Hung refuses to talk.
One day, Teh Hsiang drinks in a small restaurant and discovers the beautiful proprietress,
Mrs. Wang. He tells her how they arrested Hung. Mrs. Wang, also a sympathizer of Shao Lin,
tells the story to Li Shih-chung, another sympathizer. Li and other sympathizers all blame
Fang Shih-yu for the arrest of Hung. Fang understands and becomes very angry. He wants to
rescue Hung by himself.
They stop Fang. They know that Teh is some kind of a sex maniac and set a plan to trap him
with Mrs. Wang as the bait. With the help of Mrs. Wang, Fang breaks into the cellar where
Hung is imprisoned. But Fang fails to rescue Hung singlehanded.
Fang with the help of others tries to dig a tunnel to Hung’s cellar but they are stopped
by a stone wall.
Meanwhile, Che plans to set a trap to capture Fang and other followers by prosecuting Hung
in the public.
Fang, though stopped by the stone wall, still manages to loosen the shackles locking Hung.
Hung later kills Teh Hsiang with his chain at the cellar and escapes. He also challenges
Che to a duel.
After a fierce fight which takes place in an open ground, Hung, Fang and Li finally kill
Che and all his men.

The oft-adapted Water Margin is one of the four great classics in Chinese literature
and the defining tome of chivalry and heroics. Director Chang Cheh offered his
same-titled epic adaptation of the novel in 1972 with an all-star cast that included
Ti Lung, David Chiang, Chen Kuan Tai, and Ngok Wah. In the same year, Ngok Wah also
starred in Pursuit, again playing the role of Liangshan hero Lin Chong. Directed by
Cheng Gang (The Twelve Gold Medallions, The 14 Amazons), Pursuit focuses especially
on the turbulent life of Lin Chong, one of the 108 storied outlaws of the marsh who
sealed their brotherhood at Mount Liang during the mid-Song Dynasty.
A tall, powerful, and fiercely just warrior, Lin Chong is perhaps the most skilled
in war out of the Liangshan heroes. He was once an Imperial Guards trainer with an
army of 800,000 at his command, but court corruption and persecution forces him onto
the path of an outlaw. The film follows Lin's fateful steps from the Song court to
Mount Liang, detailing the trials and encounters that eventually brings him into the
company of Song Jiang, Wu Song, Wu Yong, and the other noble outlaws with whom he
collaborates to fight against the corrupt court. Pursuit co-stars Wang Jin Feng,
Fan Mei Sheng, and Paul Chun.

Lyrics: Chang Cheh
During the Six Kingdoms era the Chun Empire is stronger than all others in China
and launches constant attacks on neighboring areas.
The king of the Han Empire, a weak character, has allowed his uncle Han Kuei to
assume full power. Han Kuei wants his empire to come under the rule of the Chun
Empire, but loyal officer Yen Sui opposes this.
In the Wei Empire, there is a patriot called Nieh Chen who has studied swordsmanship
under Wu Gee. Wu’s maid servant Hsia Ying is found of Nieh. This arouses the
resentment of his colleague, Hsu Shih. He is keen on the girl but she does not like him.
During a practice fencing session, Hsu Shih, in a fit of jealousy, strikes Nieh when he
is not looking. Wu, angered by this bit of foul play, dismisses Hsu.
Seeking revenge, Hsu accuses Nieh of treason. Hsu leads a group of soldiers to kill Wu
and his students. Nieh manages to escape the attack with his mother and sister and goes
on to kill Hsu later that night. Nieh seeks shelter in the Che Empire but Hsia Ying must
remain in the Wei Empire because her father is gravely ill.
A year goes by. Han Kuei plans to eliminate his enemies. His men attack Yen Sui at his
home. Yen’s guard, Tu Po, saves his master but is killed during the fighting. Before he
dies, Tu Po, a colleague of Nieh tells Yen to seek the help of Nieh.
At this time, Nieh is earning his living as a butcher. One day he helps a pedlar who is
being bullied by soldiers. This act impresses Yen who happens to see the incident. Next
day, Yen sends Nieh a present but he has already left home.
The two men meet unexpectedly in an inn and renew their acquaintance.
Meanwhile, Hsia Ying is pregnant as a result of her relationship with Nieh.
At a big festival in the Chun Empire, Nieh poses as an ambassador and is granted an
audience with Han Kuei. He kills Han Kuei and is attacked by his guards. Surrounded by
soldiers and realizing he has no way of escape, Nieh kills himself rather than fall into
his enemies’ hands.
Hsia Ying, although grief-stricken, tries to console herself with the thought that it is
her duty to raise Nieh’s child.

Late, great director Yueh Feng (a.k.a. Griffin Yue) started his filmmaking
career in Shanghai in the 1930s during the Golden Age of Chinese Cinema. Like
much of the Shanghai contingent, Yueh moved to Hong Kong in the late 40s
where he continued to make films for another 20 years, settling with Shaw
Brothers for the final leg of his career. Honored with a Lifetime Achievement
Award by the Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild in 1991, Yue made over 80 films
in a wide range of genres, from Huangmei folk opera classics like The Three
Smiles (1969) to martial arts films like Trilogy of Swordsmanship (1972).
Yueh's last film was the 1974 period action piece Village of Tigers, jointly
directed with actor-cum-director Wang Ping who also appears in the film.
Starring Shaw Brothers hero Ngok Wah, Wong Hap, and Shu Pei Pei, Village of
Tigers is set in a village dominated by a sinister sect leader. He openly
flouts the law, operating harems and gambling dens and even selling young girls
in public. Many young men in the martial arts world are lured into working for
him, led down the wrong path by the temptations of money and women. In these
trying times, the most unlikely of heroes will emerge, a weak scholar who
masters the Iron Sand Palm technique.

Life in the Heavenly Palace is dull and bleak.
The Maid From Heaven (Seventh Fairy) is the seventh daughter of the Emperor of Heaven.
Tired of her life in Heaven and admiring the boy-and-girl’s love on earth, she suddenly
feels the irresistible urge to join the world below.
With the sympathy and support of her six elder sisters, The Maid From Heaven
(Seventh Fairy) defies the law of Heaven and descends upon the earth alone.
It happens that a young man by the name of Tung Yung is recently bereft of his father. He
is so poor that he cannot afford to bury the deceased parent. In order to obtain enough
money for his father’s funeral, Tung Yung sells himself out as a slave to a rich man,
Master Fu, for a period of three years.
His touching filial piety moves the heart of The Maid From Heaven (Seventh Fairy) so much
that the fairy transforms herself into a lovely country maid to meet Tung Yung on his way,
pretending that she has lost her way in an outlandish country after failing to locate her
relative.
She requests him to give her a helping hand and in return for his kindness she hints that
she is willing to marry him.
Thinking that he can scarcely look after himself let alone support a family, Tung Yung
politely turns her down.
With the help of Earth God and by dint of her eloquence, she ultimately succeeds in
persuading Tung Yung. In the presence of Earth God as their witness and an oak tree as their
go-between, the two get married. They both go to Master Fu’s house for work.
A stingy millionaire, Master Fu shows his displeasure when Tung Yung brings along his wife,
thus increasing Master Fu’s burden of support.
Realising the situation, The Maid From Heaven (Seventh Fairy) explains that she cannot only
do the domestic chores but knows how to weave cloth.
With a malicious intention to embarrass her, Master Fu lays down a condition : unless The
Maid From Heaven (Seventh Fairy) can weave ten bolts of brocade in one night, Tung Yung shall
work as his slave for six years instead of three years to redeem himself.
Confident, The Maid From Heaven (Seventh Fairy) queries the master, “What if I can fulfill
your condition in one night?”
“Then I shall cut down Tung Yung’s years of redemption from three years to 100 days”,
Master Fu replies firmly.
“It’s a deal!” The Maid From Heaven accepts the condition and that night, she asks for help
from her six elder sisters. All the sisters come down to earth and help her weave the ten
bolts of brocade in two hours.
What else can Master Fu do but to keep his promise?
After 100 days of toil in Master Fu’s house, the couple regains their freedom and prepares to
get underway for Tung Yung’s countryside, anticipating a free, pleasant married life.
On their way home, Tung Yung discovers that his wife is pregnant. Overjoyed, he goes off
foraging for food to feed her.
The moment Tung Yung leaves her, an Envoy of the Emperor of Heaven arrives with four giant
Buddhas to order The Maid From Heaven to return immediately to the Heavenly Palace.
Unwilling to separate from Tung Yung, The Maid From Heaven defies the Emperor’s order. The
Envoy leaves for the Heavenly Palace and returns with a second order from the Emperor – to
dismember Tung Yung unless The Maid From Heaven returns to her father.
When The Maid From Heaven is running from pillar to post, Tung Yung comes back with date-pears
(Tsao Li in Chinese) which he has picked for his wife to eat.
She hints at their inevitable separation by calling his attention to Tsao Li which in Chinese
resembles the sound of “Early Separation”. Tung Yung does not catch her meaning. She cannot
help but show him a poem on her fan from which Tung Yung learns to his astonishment that his
wife is a transfiguration from a fairy, that The Emperor of Heaven is summoning her home and
that their separation is inevitable. His heart aches with a wrench.
At the painful moment of parting, The Emperor’s Envoy appears for the third time demanding the
return of The Maid From Heaven. Tung Yung holds tight to her clothes but is knocked unconscious
by the Heavenly army.
Afraid that Tung Yung may be dismembered by Heaven’s will, The Maid From Heaven agrees to
return to her father. Upon departure, she tearfully leaves words on the oak tree, promising to
return to the shade under the oak tree when flowers blossom in the next spring. She will bring
him the child and swears that though they are as far apart from each other as Heaven and Earth,
she will never cease loving him.
When Tung Yung comes to, the fairy is gone. Reading the words on the oak tree, Tung Yung can
only look forlornly towards the Heaven with a pair of tearful eyes and a poor, broken heart.
