Unusual doesn't even begin to describe Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, a Shaw Brothers science-fiction comedy that makes even the strangest Hong Kong comedies look like stuffy deadpan dramas. Uber-adorable Cherie Chung stars as Li Tien Chen, a silly gold-digging girl who's rumored to be the unluckiest person on Planet Earth. Backing up that rumor are plain facts: she causes a ten-car auto accident, loses out on an engagement to a mega-rich guy, and she gets abducted and impregnated by aliens - and that's just in the first half-hour! She also has to suffer through messed-up suicide pacts, a meteoric rise-and-fall flirtation with superstardom, a spanking with a chicken leg, and a pair of incredibly unattractive private detectives following her around. There's also a Darth Vader clone, a wacky mixed-up lightsaber battle, musical numbers, food fights, werewolves, and probably the kitchen sink, if you look hard enough! Director Alex Cheung and his six screenwriters leave no stone unturned in their quest to find the strangest, most bizarre sources for comedy weirdness this side of Ed Wood. When you see Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, you'll have to agree: they succeeded.
Yi Tien (Yi Lei) is one life’s losers. He yearns to become a famous detective, but his undignified assignments leave him so disillusioned that he plans suicide. About to jump under a train, he encounters Ah Chen (Cherie Chung Cho-hung) who is planning likewise: she claims that she has been molested by a space alien from a flying saucer and has therefore been rejected by her disbelieving fiance. The two narrowly escape death together, while Yi Tien vows he will prove her story and thus make himself famous.
Ah Chen is unable to convince anyone of what she has seen, until one day a certain Dr. Lu confirms her sensational claim and she catapults to fame as a sex-object. A mad scramble for publicity ensues among girls claiming similar experiences.
But the overzealous Yi Tien shatters Ah Chen’s dreams of stardom when he finds the flying saucer episode to be an entirely human hoax. Despite all this, the two end up happily married to each other.

Like legendary director Chu Yuan did so often and so successfully, Chang Peng-yi adapted this film from a story by Ku Lung. And like the equally legendary Chang Cheh, he cast the majestic Ti Lung, along with "Venoms" Lo Meng and Sun Chien (not to mention master action actors Ai Fei, Pai Piao, and the "queen of Shaw kung-fu," Lily Li) for a spectacular showcase of mystical "Martial Arts World" intrigue and consummate kung-fu.
The Great Banner Clan Chief’s eldest son is executed by his godbrother Tieh Chung-tang for being in love with rival clan chief’s daughter Leng Ching-shang. His brother Yun Cheng seeks revenge on the Lengs but is captured. Tieh takes Leng Ching-ping hostage and exchanges her for Yun, but the two are intercepted by rivals while fleeing. They are lured to the apparent safety of a temple where they are attacked by another rival, Szutu Hsiao, who pursues Tieh and the badly injured Yun into the wilderness. Tieh diverts Szutu’s attention by faking his own death, allowing Yun to be rescued by Wen Tai-tai. Wen nurses Yun without him realizing she is Szutu’s mistress and also after the clan’s treasure.
Tieh meanwhile encounters Shui Ling-kuang who happens to have the treasure and the clan’s kung fu manual and steals them from her. He subsequently runs into Yun and Wen at and inn where Wen narrowly prevents Yun from attacking him in error.
Shui has followed him to the inn to get the treasure back, but she is captured in Tieh’s absence by a well-to-do local, Chu Tsao. Tieh must win a strip-contest to secure her release, at which point the rivals break in but are beaten off by Tieh with Chu’s help. Chu is asked to escort Shui back to her home, while Tieh set off on Chu’s mother’s instructions to find a certain Jih Hau on Chang Chun Island. However, Jih Hau has long since died; instead, he finds an elderly man there who is expert at kung fu and who turns out to be the Great Banner Clan founder and Tieh’s father. Only then does he learn of his own strange past and the clan feuds.
Tieh returns to the clan. The Lengs are completely crushed and the intrigues of the Cheng clan are explained.

One of the Shaw Brothers' key directors during the studio's golden years, Kuei Chih Hung was a versatile filmmaker who dabbled in a range of genres, like contemporary crime (The Tea House), period action (Killer Constable), and especially horror (Corpse Mania, the Hex series). In 1980, he tried his hand at kung fu comedy with the fabulously titled Coward Bastard, which is produced in the same plucky spirit as Drunken Master. True to the genre, the film is an entertaining mix of comedic slapstick, martial arts acrobatics, and broad life lessons starring the underrated Meng Yuen Man, a former child star who trained at the same school as Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, and Yuen Wah.
Titular Coward Bastard Hung (Lam Fai Wong) often makes trouble at So's restaurant, but the equal cowardly So (Wang Sha) is too timid to fight back. Instead he takes out all his anger on his unfortunate young worker, Ah Chat (Meng Yuen Man). Ah Chat discovers by chance that the cook (Yuen Wah) is actually skilled in martial arts, and begins to secretly learn his moves. When Hung comes by to cause trouble again, Ah Chat teaches him a lesson with his newly acquired skills. There's no time to celebrate, however, as Hung soon returns with more brawn, and these won't be fended off so easily.

Famed actor Wu Chia-hsiang directed dramas, fantasies, romances, and this jaunty, exciting, swashbuckling tale of a Chinese Robin Hood who fought evil warlords decades ago. Yueh Hua stars -- in one of his earliest films -- as a circus acrobat who becomes "The Masked Robber" to defeat corrupt government officials. Revenge is, indeed, sweet for the protagonists in this lively adventure of fast action, close calls, and clever conceits.
Some 40 years ago when warlords rode rough-shod over the Chinese people, circus acrobat Pao Te-cheng took to the hills and began robbing the rich to help the poor. His daring feats earned him the nickname of “The Masked Robber”. Trying to intercept a large sum of money to be turned over to public security chief Cheng Kuan-hsi, he is nearly caught. Partner Hsiao Chung is jubilant over his safe return. But in the government office, chief detective Ma Pu-yun frantically plots his arrest.
Ma Chien-li, son of the chief detective, devises a clever trap set for Ma Pu-yun’s birthday party. Among the guests is Huang Tan-ping who is engaged to Doctor David Lee. Ma Chien-li proposes to her without knowing this.
Pao Te-cheng sees through the plot and walks off with precious jewels. Chen Shih-te, Ma Pu-yun’s deputy, captures Pao Te-cheng. Seeing Pao Te-cheng wounded and pretending ignorance of his identity, Chen Shih-te takes him to Dr. Lee for treatment. Chen Shih-te reports this to Ma Pu-yun in return for a handsome reward. Pao Te-cheng, after revealing to Dr. Lee and Huang Tan-ping his true name, escapes before Ma-yun arrives. Knowing Ma Chien-li has long desired Tan-ping, Chen Shih-te makes up a tale to frame Dr. Lee who is arrested and tortured to break Tan-ping’s resistance. Tan-ping stands firm but Dr. Lee’s mother commits suicide. Meanwhile, Pao Te-cheng is captured while trying to rescue David Lee from prison. Hsiao Chung impersonates an official and frees both his partner and David. Pao Te-cheng now informs Tan-ping of David’s safety, but has her fool around with Ma Chien-li for the time being.
Afterwards, Pao Te-cheng impersonates a distant uncle of Kung Chueh, the concubine of Cheng Kuan-hsi, and breaks into the home of the security chief. In one swift stroke, Pao Te Ching eliminates the people’s scourge and his cohorts.

The Shaw Brothers studios adapts Alexandre Dumas' The Man With The Iron Mask to ancient China in the rousing adventure The King with My Face! As in Dumas' classic, a pair of twin brothers is born, and each given wildly separate fates and identities. Korean actor Shin Yung Kyoon plays both brothers, one a debauched and ruthless man who inherits the Emperor's throne, and the other a noble and heroic warrior who fights for the common man. But the Emperor's greed and insecurity is so great that he imprisons his own brother and forces him to wear an iron mask, forever hiding his visage from those who would mistake him for the Emperor. Beautiful starlet Li Jing appears as a princess, and the love interest for both brothers. Shin Yung Kyoon lights up the screen in his dual role, and director Ho Meng Hua easily transposes the opulence of Louis XIV's royal court to the Imperial Palace of ancient China. The King With My Face is an entertaining and exciting adventure told in true Shaw Brothers swashbuckling fashion!
After giving birth to twin boys, the wife of Emperor Chuang of the Chu State names the elder Hsiung Chien, and the younger Hsiung Wei. By law, the eldest son is heir to the throne; but the child Hsiung Chien is lost in the confusion of a rebellion. He is rescued by veteran General Cheng Tien who raises him as a foster son and calls him Cheng An. Ten years later Cheng An is already an accomplished warrior.
Having ascended the throne, Hsiung Wei, now called Emperor Ping, leads a life of debauchery and soon falls victim to his obsequious lackeys.
Elder statesman Tou Po-pi, anxious to gain strong allies, succeeds in persuading Emperor Ping to marry Princess Hui Chi, daughter of the chief of the Marchioness of Tsai. Chi Chiang, a palace maid who has had an affair with the Emperor, learns of the impending wedding and tries desperately to stop it. To placate her, the Emperor promises to build her a palace outside the capital.
On a hunting trip, Cheng An and his friend Chou Yuan witness raping and pillaging by government troops led by Wen Shou, son of Wen Tzu-yuan, notorious adviser to the Emperor. Routed in an ensuing skirmish, Wen Shou reports the case to his father. The description of someone bearing a striking resemblance to Emperor Ping convinces Tzu Yuan that Hsiung Chien is still alive. He orders the arrest of General Cheng Tien, his family, and Cheng An.
As the wedding date approaches, Emperor Ping, fearful of a possible uprising, summons Cheng An to impersonate him to meet the bride. Substitute and bride fall in love at first sight. The jealous Chi Chiang orders all supplies for the bride to be cut off, in a desperate bid to get her out of the country. Infuriated, Princess Hui Chi takes her entourage and leaves secretly.
Informed of her escape, the Emperor again orders Cheng An to intercept the bride while pretending to be him. Cheng An, as the Emperor’s double, dares not reveal the secret between him and the Emperor. Cheng An’s romance is soon brought to the attention of the ruthless Emperor who angrily orders his execution.
The critical situation forces Tou Po-pi to disclose that Cheng An is actually the Emperor’s twin brother. Cheng An’s life is thus spared, but the suspicious Emperor orders an iron mask to be placed over his face to ensure he won’t be mistaken for the Emperor.
Learning of the Emperor’s cruelty, Princess Hui Chi manages to get her fiance drunk and set Cheng An and his friends free. While the Emperor is still intoxicated, the clever Princess has the mask fixed over his face and locks him up in prison where he is rescued by Wen Tzu-yuan.
At the wedding of Cheng An and the Princess, Tou Po-pi, threatened by Wen Tzu-yuan, is again compelled to tell the people the truth.
Cheng An kills Wen Tzu-yuan while the deposed Emperor Ping falls to his death. Cheng Tien is fatally hit by an arrow, before breathing his last, the smiling old man watches Cheng and Princess Hui Chi unite in wedlock.

This was one of Chow Sze-loke's final movies after a thirty-year career. The script, by future "godfather of the kung-fu film" Chang Cheh, tells the story of a poor but beautiful girl who starts her eventful and erotic road to doom as a maid of a rich man. Diana Chang Chung-wen, comely costar of The Empress Wu, ably plays the girl who becomes the wife of a midget, the mistress of a playboy, a husband murderer, the seductress of her brother-in-law, and, ultimately, his victim as well.
Poor yet beautiful, Lotus Pan is first sold to rich man Chang as a maid. The rich man takes advantage of her innocence. But his wife becomes jealous and gives her away as wife to the town midget, Wu Ta.
While Wu Ta is ugly and deformed, his brother Wu Sung is both handsome and brave. He passes through the town after he has killed a tiger with his bare hands. A hero’s welcome is given him.
Wu Ta invites his brother to his home. Lotus is immediately in love with her brother-in-law. She makes advances which are turned down by the upright hero. Wu Sung, however, decides to move into his own house since he has been made the town police chief.
Playboy Shihmen Ching sees Lotus one day and is enamored. He goes to matchmaker Wang Po for help. The old woman helps him and Lotus is soon his mistress.
Hero Wu Sung is sent to another town on business. Therefore, when Wu Ta hears about the love affair, he has only himself to right the wrong. He goes home one day to surprise the lovers. Shihmen Ching kicks Wu Ta and makes away.
Wu Ta is injured. Lotus carries on her affair with Shihmen. The two soon decide, at Wang Po’s suggestion, Wu Ta should die. Arsenic powder does the work.
Lotus Pan has her husband’s body cremated. The cremator, a good man, saves some evidence of the poisoning for future use.
Wu Sung one night has a dream. He rushes home only to find his brother already dead. Lotus comes out to meet him in her mourning gown. But Wu Sung detects that she is wearing gay dresses inside.
A suspicious Wu Sung starts to make inquiries. The cremator presents him with the evidence of poisoning. A vengeful Wu Sung soon finds out about the part played by playboy Shihmen Ching. He vows for vengeance
Shihmen is drinking with his friends when Wu Sung comes with a knife. Shihmen’s men cannot stop him. Wu Sung finally fights Shihmen and kills him. He cuts off the playboy’s head.
At the Wu Ta house, the neighbors gather to wait for the news. Wu Sung comes and throws down Shihmen’s head. Lotus tremblingly makes a confession and then she is killed by Wu Sung.
The young man surrenders himself and is sentenced to banishment from civilization.

Lu Chun-ku
Actor Lu Chun-ku really hit his stride as a director of mystical kung-fu epics, like Holy Flame Of The Martial World, and this -- truly one of the best of its kind. Hsu Shao-chiang stars as a put-upon illegitimate son of a "Martial Arts World" master, who nearly sacrifices all to learn the "Silkworm Style" -- making him a veritable "Spider-Swordsman"! That's just the pay-off to this eye-filling, mind-bending kung-fu phantasmagorical which elicited cries of joyous disbelief in virtually all the cinemas where it was shown. Featuring a top notch cast including "Venoms" Lo Meng, Sun Chien, and Wang Li, this extravaganza truly warrants the description: "unforgettable."
The Bastard Swordsman isn't a kung fu movie -- well, that may depend on how you define "kung fu." I prefer to distinguish between kung fu and wuxia, and Bastard is a wuxia movie. I fell in love with it instantly. It also greatly influenced John Carpenter's "Big Trouble in Little China."
A little background info: To the best of my knowledge, the legacy of the story started with a 1978 TV series called "Reincarnated." It starred Norman Chu and Nora Miao, and Ching Siu Tung choreographed the action. It was an early effort to feature "new wave" action choreography. This show was so successful that it spawned a sequel immediately, which starred Goo Goon Chung of Shaw Brothers fame (kind of). Anyway, Reincarnated is one of the rare series that didn't adapt from any source. More incredibly, a book was adapted from it.
The Bastard Swordsman came out 5 years after Reincarnated. They have the same Chinese title, which translates into "Transformation of the Heavenly Silkworm." Interesting name indeed. The story is about, well, the transformation of the main character, played by Norman Chu again in Bastard. While the title "Bastard Swordsman" may give off a negative impression, the movie itself is nothing short of deep fascination.
Made in the same year as the revolutionary swordplay extravaganza “Duel to the Death”, Bastard Swordsman in comparison has a much lower budget and the usual Shaw studio atmosphere. Some call is a "sci-fi" film, but in essence it's just normal wuxia style, although people not familiar with "wuxia" may see it differently. Some may call the special effects cheap, but they fully serve the purpose. Although Bastard's production values don't come near that of Duel, it's a far more authentic wuxia movie, made very similar in style to wuxia TV series of the late 80s. This is just the intention of the director, and I would not condemn Duel for not looking like the TV series. But as far as wuxia movies go, NOBODY made them as beautifully as the Shaw Brothers, specifically from director Tony Lu Jun Gu, who also made several of my personal favourites: Secret Service of the Imperial Court (1984), Lady Assassin (1983), and Holy Flame of the Martial World (1983).
No other Shaw Brothers (SB) movie features dashing and good-looking swordplay (as well as hand-to-hand combat) like Bastard Swordsman does. I have watched countless SB movies, and this was the first one to make my jaw drop. Now I have to admit, I am a HUGE fan of wuxia fiction, and this one has it all -- great action, great story, great cast, great characters. This is why I watch Shaw Brothers movies. This is also their greatest entry into the wuxia genre, which nobody does better than SB. (~review by PJ @ http ://www.spcnet.tv)

Director Chang Cheh brings heroic bloodshed to the fast-and-furious modern day in Police Force, a tough cop thriller that marked the debut of one of Shaw Brothers most popular stars, Alexander Fu Sheng! Chung Wong stars as Officer Huang Gao Tung, a determined cop who joined the force to avenge the death of his dear friend Liang Kuan (Alexander Fu). But the road to justice is conflicted, as Huang's thirst for revenge stands opposed to his duties as a righteous enforcer of the law. Can a man reconcile his loyalty to duty with his loyalty for a departed friend?
Using entertaining gunplay and gritty martial arts sequences, Chang Cheh successfully brought the modern police thriller to Hong Kong audiences with Police Force. One of the first major Hong Kong films to depict the Royal Hong Kong Police on such a grand scale, Police Force was produced with the assistance of the real Hong Kong police, who lent their expertise, as well as vehicles and extras to the film. Chang Cheh also didn't neglect his martial arts background, and employed action directors Tong Gaai and Lau Ka Leung to create the brutal fisticuffs. With powerful drama and authentic police action, Police Force hits the bulls-eye!
Liang Kuan (Alexander Fu Sheng) is killed, and his girlfriend Shen Yen (Lily Li) is raped, by Kao Tu and his thugs. This incident shocks and saddens Liang’s friend, Huang Kuo-tung (Wang Chung), into a desire for justice and revenge. He joins the Hong Kong Police Force, and after a period of training, becomes a highly competent and dedicated policeman. His first assignment is to assist in the investigation of Liang Kuan’s death.
Five years passed, during which Huang Kuo-tung gains promotion, and falls in love with Shen Yen gradually.
While investigating a second murder, Huang questions a bar-girl. This makes her boyfriend Sun Chu-chung (Wang Hsia), very apprehensive, as he is a gangster and has had Kao Tu in his employ since the killing of Liang Kuan. Fearing police involvement over Kao’s past crime, Sun Chu-chung orders him killed. But before this can happen, Shen Yen recognizes the killed, Huang arrests him, and also obtains valuable information about Sun Chu-chung’s illegal counterfeit activities from him.
Huang Kuo-tung leads the hunt for the fleeing Sun Chu-chung, and finally manages to capture him and his associates. Huang’s bravery and devotion to duty are recognized by an official commendation, and his personal revenge is satisfied.

The 1972 Shaw Brothers kung fu film The Deadly Knives lives up to its name with plenty of body-impaling, flying-knife action. Also known as Fists of Vengeance, the film is helmed by Korean director Chang Yi Hu, who directed a handful of genre-arching films for the Shaw Brothers during the 1960s and 70s including period actioner The Thunderbolt Fist (1972) and supernatural romance Night of the Devil's Bride (1975). The Deadly Knives stars martial artist Ling Yun (Six Assassins, The Iron Buddha), starlet Lily Li (The Wandering Swordsman), and father-daughter duo Ching Miao (Heads for Sale) and Ching Li (Blood Brothers).
Plotting to obtain the Yen family's land, dastardly Japanese plutocrat Omura (Ching Miao) bribes Yen nephew Hsu Chien (Chen Feng Chen) to steal the family seal and land deed. When Hsu Chien is caught in the act, he viciously beats elderly Master Yen to death to cover his actions. Determined to avenge the wrongs committed on his family and his country, young master Yen Tzu Fei (Ling Yun) blazes a knife-throwing path of revenge that leads him to his love Yue Hua's (Ching Li) father, who has corrupt connections with the Japanese.

Welcome the "Bandit with a Thousand Faces" to the ranks of the great screen "outlaw heroes". Like Zorro, he uses a secret identity as a playboy to foil tyrannical Shan Yung county authorities. Bringing this swashbuckling adventure to the screen is a cast and crew fairly bursting with talent - including directors who were also popular actors and writers, and an actor (Ling Yun) - playing the lead dual role of twin brothers - who was also the director/ writer of some of the greatest martial art epics ever made!
Kwun Yau-tung the “Bandit with a Thousand Faces”, wages a one-man war against the venal and tyrannical authorities in Shan Yang County.
Police officer Ma Tak is suspicious of Yau-tung but dares not arrest him because he is friendly with the County Governor and his daughter, Hou Wan.
Yau-tung masks his real activities by posing in public as a playboy.
One day, Yau-tung holds up a caravan carrying a large sum of money to the county capital. Ma had set an ambush for him but he escapes with a sword wound on his face. Ma issues an order for the arrest of any person with a fresh scar on his face.
Yau-tung is given refuge in the suburbs by his relatives, Chin Yun-feng and his daughter, both revolutionaries masque-rading as acrobats. Ma and his guards search Chin’s house but fail to find Yau-tung.
Seeking to get even with Ma, Yau-tung enlists the help of his twin brother, Yiu-nam. Yiu-nam, posing as his brother, crashes a party hosted by the County Governor. His audacity shames Ma who had earlier boasted that Yau-tung would not dare appear.
Later, Yau-tung lures Ma to the suburbs where he slashes his face. Ma’s guards rush to his aid but, seeing the cut on his face, mistakenly arrest him as the “Bandit with a Thousand Faces”.
Yau-tung learns that the Provincial Government is sending Commissioner Wong to arrest him. He tells his brother to get further information from Hou Wan. Acting on a tip, Ma tracks down Yiu-nam but he manages to reach the house of flower seller Yat Chou-koo. Ma kills the girl’ brother in a fight and arrests Yiu-nam.
The girl informs Yau-tung of the arrest and he plans to rescue his brother from prison. With the help of other rebels, Yau-tung succeeds.
Meanwhile, in the County Governor’s house, Commissioner Wong and Ma celebrate the capture of the man whom they think is the “Bandit with a Thousand Faces”. Yau-tung raids the house and captures the County Governor. Ma and his guards, in attempting to free him, kill him accidentally.
As the battle rages, Ma also is killed by accident. Yau-tung escapes to the suburbs where he joins his colleagues to carry on their struggle against the corrupt government.

Shaw Brothers super director Li Han-hsiang was particularly masterful in two genres: erotica and classic Chinese tales. He combined these two loves in this two-part examination of lust. The first story features an elderly jeweler's adventures with his unsatisfied wife, a handsome neighbor, and the neighborhood bordello. The second is a more modern tale of sex, lies, and videotape. Variety admiringly commented, "Sex still sells in-between Shaolin monasteries and kung fu odysseys... as this bedroom romp proves."
(1) The Illicit Lovers
Pan Lao-hai (Li Kun) is a middle-aged jeweller, who has married a widow (Hu Chin). He is a suspicious blockhead, who is so afraid that his wife might be unfaithful to him, that he locks her in her house whenever he goes out. He also erects a barbed-wire fence around the house.
A young bachelor, Teng Hsiao-hsien (Kang Kai), who is their neighbour, manages to win the heart of Mrs. Pan. He finds a way to sneak into the house and makes love with her during her husband’s absence.
Pan is unable to satisfy his wife, even though he takes a “sex tonic”. Mrs. Pan and Teng then hatch a plot to deceive him even more. She pretends to be sick, and Teng bribes a female black magician to attend to the “patient” and to claim that she has symptoms of being possessed by the spirit of her former husband. After examining the “patient” the black magician advises her husband not to sleep with her in the same bed. Pan obeys the quack’s orders, for fear of being killed by the spirit. In order to make it doubly safe for him to pursue his own amorous adventure, Teng helps Pan to have a liaison with a prostitute.
(2) The Poison Weed
The Big Brother (Wang Hsia) of a drug syndicate suspects that a glamorous girl, Louise Li, has betrayed him to the police. He therefore orders his followers, Chan Sheng, Yu Jen and Ling Ling (Lily Li) to force Louise to talk. But they can find nothing to incriminate her. In the meantime, Big Brother is captivated by Louise’s charms and, with the assistance of his followers, he succeeds in having sex with her. Several days later, Louise, who shows him a film of their love-making, confronts Big Brother. Louise tells the shocked man that his followers had made the film in order to blackmail him. Unless he pays them $4 million, they threaten to show it to Big Brother’s wife. She had been the wife of the former No. 1 leader of the drug syndicate, currently serving a 30-year term in prison. Before agreeing to marry Big Brother, she had forced him to swear to always stick by her, otherwise he would forfeit any claim to their joint property.
Big Brother reluctantly gives the blackmailers a cheque for $4 million to redeem the film. The cunning blackmailers also trick his wife into putting her signature onto the cheque, because without her signature, the cheque would be invalid.
The climax of the film is reached when Big Brother confronts his wife, as she is not one to take things lying down.
