Italy 1978

by Lucio Fulci

from The Spaghetti Western Database

Released in ’78, when the Italian film industry already seemed to have buried the genre, Silver Saddle is often called the last real Spaghetti western. Because most people involved in the project realized it would be some kind of funeral rite, Duccio Tessari was asked to contribute to the script. Tessari had co-written the first ‘real spaghetti western’, A Fistful of Dollars, so it seemed reasonable he would co-write the last one too. Echoing Leone’s first western, the film would start in a similar way, but unfold differently. Tessari’s name is not on the credits and Adriano Bolzani, who’s accredited with both story and screenplay, sustains he did all the writing on his own (1). Still the opening seems similar to A Fistful of Dollars, only with a different outcome: it’s about a family torn apart and a boy being mistreated (his father is shot before his very eyes), but instead of weeping helplessly the boy defends himself (he shoots the murderer and steals his beautiful silver saddle) and becomes the film’s protagonist.

Some twenty years later the boy has become a famous gunslinger who calls himself Roy Blood; the silver saddle has become his distinctive mark. He meets a sneaky drifter, Two-Strike Snake, a man who steals from the dead. Snake recognizes the silver saddle and decides to join Roy Blood, in order to scavenge the victims behind his back. In town Snake is addressed by a man who wants to hire Roy Blood for a professional killing; initially Roy refuses, but he changes his mind when he’s told the name of the victim: Barrett. The professional killer who shot his father, was paid by a man who was also called Barrett. Until this moment, Silver Saddle has been a worthy conclusion of the genre, a richly textured western story, bursting with action, part serious, part tongue in cheek. The opening scene is marvelous and Geoffrey Lewis deliciously hams it up as the scavenger named Snake in his second spaghetti western (the first being My name is Nobody). But in a scene remarkably similar to a scene in Giulio Petroni’s Night of the Serpent the intended victim turns out to be a child. We all know kids and westerns aren’t a good combination and although this kid doesn’t spoil the whole show, the film takes a more mellow turn after his first appearance.

Silver Saddle was very much a compromise movie, and it shows: Fulci wanted to make a western that would outdo all others westerns in violence and brutality, but Gemma preferred to make a film for the whole family. And because the movie is a compromise, it largely falls between two stools: it’s not particularly violent for a Fulci movie, but the violence is more graphic than in most spaghetti westerns of the previous decade; it’s also not really a family film, but some parts seem to be covered with some kind of Disney syrup: in this universe a prostitute is not only a tart with a heart, but she’ll also melt away by the sight of a ten year old boy with blue eyes and blond hair. Luckily the film eventually picks up the grittier tone of the first thirty minutes, when Fulci decides it’s high time to kill some priests an to blow up some Mexicans. Now that’s more like it.

Silver saddle isn’t one of the Great Spaghettis, but it’s a very likeable one. I agree with French author Giré that the script is a bit too tortuous for its own good. Silver Saddle is basically a thriller (who is trying to kill the child and why?) and there are quite a few twists and turns, but very little tension is created with them. But the movie is beautifully shot, the action is great and I liked the interplay between the suave (but lethal) Gemma and the sneaky (but God-fearing) Lewis. And yes, I even liked the score and the cheesy theme song (admittedly used a few times to many). Fulci originally wanted Tomas Milian for the part of Snake; no doubt he would have been an excellent choice, but Lewis simply does a tremendous job. If anybody was meant to play a character named Snake … There are nice cameos for genre veterans like Donald O’Brien, Ettore Manni and Aldo Sanbrell; beautiful Lentini on the other hand, had no prior experience with spaghetti westerns, but she deserves a place among the great madams of the genre. Apart from the references already mentioned, there’s an early scene with Gemma shooting a hole in a dollar, echoing Gemma’s first western One Silver Dollar, and a pretty bizarre whip scene, with Sanbrell threatening to beat the living daylights out of the kid (and the viewers), which seems to refer to the infamous whipping of Franco Nero in Fulci’s own Massacre Time.

Italy 1968

by Sergio Sollima

from The Spaghetti Western Database

Thomas Milian reprises his role as Cuchillo from La Resa dei conti. He is entrusted with the location of a sizable portion of gold by a revolutionary leader, and so sets off to Texas to find it. Donald O'Brian is good as the former revolutionary who also wants the gold and follows Milian. The Gold also attracts a lot of interest from a variety of other villainous quarters and what seems like half of Mexico rapidly descends on the Texas town where it is located. Unsurprisingly, gunfights ensue.

In his third western Sergio Sollima was less ambitious in his choice of themes as in its predecessors, but at the same time more choosy in the way how he told his story. So Run Man Run is for many the least of Sollima's SW but for some the most stylish of them. The film is set on the verge of the revolution but only touches the usual Zapata western themes in favour of an adventurous story about a gold hunt, in which Sollima's "intellectual" stamp is only visible in the side plots. An underrated classic of the genre.

Roy escapes from a workcamp and receives help from a miner. The miners are held hostage by the local boss Mr. Redfield. Roy starts to help the miners and also to settle some scores for a friend from the workcamp.

This movie is very 'Fistful Of Dollar'ish, both plotwise and there are also a number of scenes that seems to be straightly copied from the Leone classic. I don't see this as a bad thing because it's made very well. Why Roy was at the workcamp remains a mystery to me, he seems like a righteous man and not that much as a anti hero. Strong directing and great camerawork. Fabio Testi at his best, accompanied with a good cast and a nice music score by Bruno Nicolai.

Dario Argento takes sole writing credit for his directorial debut but The Bird with the Crystal Plumage is actually an unofficial adaptation of Fredric Brown's novel The Screaming Mimi. Sam Dalmas (Tony Musante), an American novelist in Italy, is a helpless spectator to a vicious attack in an art gallery. Initially a suspect, Sam becomes the key witness to the attempted murder, the fourth in a month but the first survived by the victim. Something about the attack haunts him and so he launches his own investigation as the murders continue, the killer finally turning on Sam. Argento exhibits a sure hand in his first film, creating an easy to follow thriller spiced with tightly choreographed murder scenes and leavened with character humor (his colorful cast includes a genial stuttering pimp and an eccentric artist who lives in a house with no doors). But it's his gift for arresting images and cinematic inventiveness that gives this thriller its edge, from the opening murder where Sam impotently watches the bleeding victim while trapped in a veritable glass cage to the killer's naked eye peering through a peephole at Sam's girlfriend (Suzy Kendall) as she hysterically searches for an escape from the killer's pounding attempts to break into her apartment. Future Oscar winner Vittorio Storaro shot the film and Ennio Morricone provides an unusual, often eerie score arranged for human voices. While less baroque than Argento's later work, it's a fine first film and a standout in the giallo genre.

After wrapping up a recording session with his garage band, drummer Roberto (Michael Brandon) follows and confronts a mysterious stranger who has been stalking him to an abandoned theater where Roberto impulsively stabs him. A grinning puppet-like figure takes photos of the attack from a mezzanine box, which arrive in an envelope at Roberto's home the following day. It appears that he is being blackmailed, but it's not clear from whom or why. Suspects include a club-footed neighbor and various friends. After Roberto confesses to the stabbing, his housekeeper discovers the killer's identity, is murdered, and an increasingly paranoid Roberto sends his wife, Nina (Mimsy Farmer), out of town. He eventually tracks down the man he stabbed with the help of a flamboyant detective (Jean-Pierre Marielle) and colorful transient friend Godrey (Bud Spencer), but both the man and the detective are killed. Roberto's cousin Dalia (Francine Racette) visits and, against their better judgment, they begin a passionate love affair. Elsewhere, the police use a special camera that can capture the final image a murder victim sees off their eyeball; this technique is used to track down the real killer.

The film that has become the master work in Italian horror maestro Dario Argento's canon, Deep Red holds up brilliantly despite the plethora of copycat slasher films it inspired in the years to follow. The film opens with a flashback murder shown from the perspective of a child while an eerie nursery rhyme plays. Cut to the present, pianist Marc Daly (David Hemmings) witnesses the murder of a psychic while chatting with his drunken pal, Carlo (Gabriele Lavia). While the police investigate, Marc joins forces with attractive reporter Gianna (Daria Nicolodi). Once Marc realizes that he is a target for the killer, he seeks help from Giordani (Glauco Mauri), a professor of the paranormal, who soon becomes one of the killer's victims. Marc's research leads him to an abandoned house where he discovers a secret room that hides a corpse. Before he can call the cops, he is knocked out and awakens to find the place in flames while Gianna holds him. Racing to the neighbors to call for help, Marc discovers an important clue that leads him to a nearby school where he finally finds the killer's identity. The madman attacks him, but the police arrive to save Marc. Though the case appears to be solved, Marc comes to the disturbing realization that one piece of the puzzle remains.

A combination of alchemy, architecture, and horror, director Dario Argento's Inferno is a pulsing thriller filled with murder and supernatural mayhem. The peculiar proceedings are set into motion in both New York and Rome when two young women, Sara (Eleonora Giorgi) and Rose (Irene Miracle), find a book called The Three Mothers, a tome of alchemy written by an architect named Varelli. According to the book, Varelli built a trio of resting places for the Three Mothers, an evil trio whose identities remain at the core of the film's mystery. Rose's brother and Sara's boyfriend is Mark (Leigh McCloskey), a music student in Rome who jets to New York after Sara is murdered and Rose disappears. He follows up Rose's research on The Three Mothers and, with the help of his sister's neighbor, Elise (Daria Nicolodi), comes to the realization that the building they are in is one of Varelli's. Along the way, Mark encounters a variety of quirky characters including Elise's butler (Leopoldo Mastelloni), the building's maid (Alida Valli), a cat-hating bookseller named Kazanian (Sacha Pitoeff), and the infirm Professor Arnold (Feodor Chaliapin) and his nurse (Veronica Lazar). After a series of murders and a revelation that the butler and the maid have been plotting to steal Elise's jewels, Mark discovers a secret series of passages within the building. They lead him to its core where he finds the wheelchair-bound Professor Arnold, who explains that he is really the architect Varelli. After a violent struggle, the dying old man confesses to Mark that he is merely a servant to the Mothers. The building begins to burn out of control, but before Mark can escape, he discovers the shocking identity of the Three Mothers.

Dario Argento leaves a distinct and bloody impression with this Italian horror film that took the slasher genre to graphic new limits at the time of its release. Novelist Peter Neal (Anthony Franciosa) jets into Rome to promote his new book. Simultaneously, a killer obsessed with Neal begins a brutal series of murders that are followed by cryptic notes to the author. Inspector Germani (Giuliano Gemma) questions Neal, who then begins his own investigation into the bizarre case with the help of his assistant, Anne (Daria Nicolodi), and local youth Gianni (Christian Borromeo). Neal and Gianni follow leads to the home of a TV talk-show host (John Steiner), who is axed to death in front of Gianni while Neal is knocked unconscious. As they close in on the killer, flashbacks show the killer's murderous beginnings and an obsession with red shoes. Meanwhile, Neal's publicist, Bullmer (John Saxon), is revealed to be having an affair with the author's ex-lover, Jane (Veronica Lario), making them both potential suspects. Inspector Germani insists that Neal leave town, but even when he does, the killer strikes again, knifing Bullmer in broad daylight. At the same time, Gianni returns to the home of the dead talk-show host and recalls an important detail about the murder. However, he is strangled before he can tell anyone. At her apartment, Jane is brutally slain just as Inspector Germani arrives to discover the murderer's identity, along with the shocking, twist-filled truth behind the entire case.

by Dario Argento

from allmovie

Declared "my most personal film" by Italy's premier horror director Dario Argento, this production marked the director's return to the eerie thematic territory he pioneered in 1977 with the horror classic Suspiria. Much like that film, Phenomena conforms to the logic of nightmares. Jennifer Connelly stars as Jennifer Corvino, the daughter of an American film star, who enrolls in a prestigious Swiss boarding school under the tutelage of the prudish Mrs. Bruckner (played by frequent Argento collaborator and former beau Daria Nicolodi). Possessing a unique telepathic gift, Jennifer is capable of communicating with insects on an instinctive level, often while sleepwalking. This trait soon brands her a "freak" among her snooty classmates but makes her a valuable asset to entomologist Dr. MacGregor (Donald Pleasence), who is currently employing the innate forensic skills of insects to aid police in tracking a serial killer targeting the boarders at Jennifer's school. As Jennifer's tiny friends (including the corpse-hunting Sarcophagus Fly) guide her closer to the murderer's lair, everything from MacGregor's revenge-driven pet chimpanzee to Bruckner's monstrously disfigured son figure into the mix, providing not one but three shocking endings. Shot in English and re-dubbed for various European markets, this graphic thriller was released in drastically edited form as Creepers in the U.S. and England; Argento's original cut runs 110 minutes.

from allmovie

The polar-opposite worlds of opera and horror collide in this gory giallo film from director Dario Argento. Christina Marsillach (Tom Hanks' romantic interest in Every Time We Say Goodbye) stars as Betty, a beautiful understudy who gets an unlikely break to play the female lead in a contemporary opera of Verdi's Macbeth. Her fear of Macbeth's notorious curse proves to have foundation when a psychopath with a strange connection to Betty murders a stage hand in the midst of her debut and later kills several ravens being used in the opera. Characters introduced at this point who could be the killer include: the show's director, Marco (Ian Charleson); Betty's publicist, Mira (Daria Nicolodi); and the police inspector, Alan Santini (Urbano Barberini). The middle third of the film is devoted to the killer's bloody work which serves to torment Betty. The madman binds her and tapes a row of tiny needles beneath her eyes so that she is forced to watch him butcher a young stage manager and a costume designer, among others. With the police investigation going nowhere and the killer zeroing in on Betty's death, Marco decides to enact his own plan to stop the madman; he releases the ravens (apparently, they always remember their enemies) during a performance. The birds circle wildly before attacking the killer and plucking one of his eyeballs out. He absconds with Betty, but dies in a fire after revealing his demented motivation and his connection to the young singer. A final scene set in the Swiss mountains provides a couple of final shocks.
