That depends on what sort of design you had in mind. If you are after a basic solid colour, with some graphics, then its just case of strip it back to bare wood, sand back so the suface is as flat as possible, apply a pore filler if needed, wood sealer, primer, then colour, graphics; hand painted or decals, and a few coats of laquer.

If you sand it back and find that the grain is especially nice you might want to go with a sunburst, which is a little more complicated to apply. What you really need is a book on refinishing. There are plenty of websites around that go into more detail, you just need to google for them.

Some helpful hints;

- make sure you leave sufficant drying time between coats.
- always mask off areas you won't be painting, such as the neck.
- always wear a mask when you spray, especially with laquers like nitrocellulose.
- probably obvious, but, remove all hardware before you start anything. Strings, wiring, pickups, bridge, switches, plates...take it all off.

spray cans are fine if you don't have an air compressor and gun. Just use lighter coats, and more of them. Nitro laquer will give you that deep mirror shine as seen on high end guitars, which why I mentioned it. I know you can get it in an aerosol in the US, not sure about anywhere else though.

The area you have to cover isn't that big so you could probably get away with spending around $80 for top quality materials. When it comes to this sort of thing you do get what you pay for.

The prep is everything. If you don't sand and fill the body properly you will definitely see it in the end results. Just take your time. If you use several different products that aren't made by the same company check online as to how the chemicals will react to each other.

this pdf will give you a rough idea of what to expect but the options are pretty much endless. Good luck with it anyway. I'd like to see a pic of the finished guitar when you're done.
