the 'keyword' first main ingredient in learning to play is to have a passion..desire..want to be a.. next comes the practices... burn/bruises fingertips..(temporarily..) then u'll set to go.. trust me.. but the most important things is "the will to play".. no matter who's teaching u or self-taught bla..bla.. but with out the will.. it just wont work..

hang around alot with some local musicians,club&bars.. just to get the vibe.. motivate a bit..

Hey man I'm a guitarist. I've been playing for about two years now. I play guitar and sing in a band called Toad in Houston, Texas. We're pretty much just doing it for fun but I love it. I really want to have some kind of a career in music. What kind of stuff do you play?

I really love stuff like Tony Iommi and Ritchie Blackmore, classic hard rock stuff.

i'm playing most of the guitar stuff on that, except the solo in "My Wrath". I recorded all that stuff and played all the instruments in Loser and Question.

What equipment do you use btw?

I've always loved the look of guitars like that. Love the blue one.

faded LP's.. is just like wearing a pair of those ol' LEVI'S jeans.. yo LINE 6 amps great for practicing/home use.. like it.. still work nice in a small club scene.. (in stereo..much better.)
unless for stage-work..a JCM800.. the best 'dry' amp..

p/s: and the blue 'epi' is for those ZAKK stuffs eh.. EMGs..-solve any metal riffs...!-

Exactly right. There isn't much in metal the 85/81 combo cant solve. However, its difficult to get the unreal sustain under control when playing something like "Dont fear the reaper" lol

i've had my guitar for over a year now, i have a 250-300 dollar yamaha guitar and a small practice amp, but then again i'm still a beginner. i just barely started to get serious about playing and i suck at that. i just learned the intro to slide by the goo goo dolls, and i'd say that's an easy song, disregarding all the effort i put into learning it...

yeah man.. the best way of learning guitar is to play along your fave/familiar songs..it makes u catch the notes faster.. (becos u already kno the tunes..) the rest.. is to play it in tempo and practicing your fingering position for chord/solo..

p/s: dont play too loud.. and make sure your guitar is IN TUNE..!! an electronic-tuner help a LOT..!!

How long did it take you guys to get the fingering right? As far as pressing down right on the strings and changing chords and stuff?

seriously it depends on your practice... time & what kinda method you practice...
tips:
-try to learn/play the easiest song that you can sing along/memorize...
-loose yourself a bit... just relax.. play it slow.. smoke a cigarette blah..blah..

Quote:
Technique
Fingering and Peak Experiences

Depending on one's strategies of memorisation and "fingering" .. a player might set up conditions conducive to "peak experiences" (see Maslow) ... or indeed he/she might develop habits of playing which positively - block - these experiences.

You cannot separate the physical mechanisms from the states of mind experienced when playing an instrument. They are like the warp and woof of a tapestry.

Good fingering systems will therefore involve programming lots of ballistic movements - as your capacity for concentration during performance can be sabotaged from the very beginning if you have to think about fingering during performance, or if the fingerings you use are too "effortful".

i just started about a few week ago, ive got a Reynolds acoustic and i picked up my dad's old electric, a National. Straight out of the 60's. Im using tabs to learn right now, and im practicing a couple different songs at a time. (Thunderstruck, Hells Bells, Seven Nation Army, The Halo theme song). Im not great at moving from chord to chord, but i did just start playing. Any tips for uber beginners from you veterans?
