Default Dark city was rated R because it was 'wierd'

Seriously... what the hell is MPAA about? I was watching how it was made and though it didn't breach any of the things for it to be a R film, because it was 'weird.' I don't know what MPAA is smoking but you can't rate a film purely based on if you don't understand it or not. So the director just put more nudity and the likes in it because I guess it didn't matter then.

Meanwhile, I actually quite liked the film. Totally weird and the CGI now makes it comical but it was brilliant!

Same, I thought it was great movie. I could understand how it was "weird" from the generic movies they are used to reviewing but that doesn't constitute an R rating.

Dark City is awesome, especially in its Director's Cut. It's a shame that its ideas and concepts were overshadowed the following year with the release of The Matrix, even though it's also a very good movie.

Dark City is a film that you either get or not. There does not seem to be a lot of middle ground. It is one of my favorite films.

In my opinion Dark City is a good movie difficult to insert in one of the movie categories - fantasy, sci-fi, noir, etc. Probably it's a Noir sci-fi with fairy tale and dystopian features.

Anyway I like it, and there is nothing in it for giving an R-rating, otherwise also Hansel and Gretel should be rated R. It's 'weird'.

for me that rating is ok since no one under 17 would understand the movie.

No no no, let's be clear what the age rating is for... if it was an understanding criteria, it would be by IQ not by age.

well no offense but in US most people don't have IQ until they turn, let's say, 40.
they don't like to watch movies that make you thing, their heads might explode.
Well no offense, but generalizing makes you seem like an ignorant, pompous ass. I originally watched Dark City when I was either 16 or 17 and I understood it just fine. I'm from the U.S. and I know plenty of intelligent and clever people (I also know plenty of stupid people).

One of my favorite movies. MPAA rated it like they rate all movies: Subjectively. Like someone else mentioned - watch "This Movie Not Yet Rated" to see how they *rate* movies - it's pretty pathetic.

Agree with everyone's comments regarding the movie itself. It's a great movie. You start watching and it pretty much draws you in.

Regarding the 'R' rating:

Tercius & ThundaJoe mentioned the doco 'This Film Not Yet Rated'.
Plenty of people sharing this documentary on this forum.

If it's accurate, then the 'R' given to 'Dark City' or the rating given to any other movie seems extremely bias, has no set rules or standards, and so really has no validity as a guide to the actual nature of the film.
