Film Ridley Scott Abandons Alien Prequel

"With Ridley Scott and 20th Century Fox announcing that the much-vaunted 3D Alien prequel has now mutated into an original SF film project called Prometheus, starring Noomi Rapace, the author of this article recalls his 2007 interview with the late Dan O'Bannon, who presumably is happy about the news, wherever he is. Asked what he'd like to see happen to the xenomorph franchise, the Alien co-creator said: 'I'd like to see it stop. A horror movie's a fragile thing, and once you've gotten past the original, it isn't scary anymore. So you do a bunch of sequels to a horror movie, all they do is drain any remaining impact out of the original...it's not as effective as it would have been if you had just left it alone.'"

Good. Some things are best just left alone.

thats a shame. I loved the whole series.

Saying that, making it a horror movie may have been a mistake. ALIENS was the most successful, and it was more action than horror.

Default The Alien prequel is now Prometheus

Source: 20th Century Fox
January 14, 2011

It appears that the Alien prequel has become something else entirely. Twentieth Century Fox announced today that Ridley Scott will direct Prometheus, described as "an original science fiction epic". Now scheduled for worldwide release on March 9, 2012, the project was originally intended as a prequel to Scott's 1979 original.

Noomi Rapace has also been announced as the first actor to sign on from the project. She will star as a scientist named Elizabeth Shaw opposite other as-of-yet-unnamed talent.

"While 'Alien' was indeed the jumping off point for this project, out of the creative process evolved a new, grand mythology and universe in which this original story takes place," says Scott, "The keen fan will recognize strands of 'Alien's' DNA, so to speak, but the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative. I couldn't be more pleased to have found the singular tale I'd been searching for, and finally return to this genre that's so close to my heart."

"In a world flooded with prequels, sequels and reboots," adds Damon Lindelof, who worked with Scott to rewrite an original draft by Jon Spaihts, "I was incredibly struck by just how original Ridley's vision was for this movie. It's daring, visceral and hopefully, the last thing anyone expects. When I sat in a movie theater as a kid, feet raised off the floor for fear that something might grab my ankles, I never dreamed in my wildest imagination I would one day get to collaborate with the man responsible for it. Working alongside him has been nothing short of a dream come true."

Prometheus is scheduled to hit March 9, 2012.

This is great news! I was excited already for a new Alien movie, even if it was a prequel, but this means they can do anything they want now. They're not constricted to just the Alien universe now. Plus, Noomi Rapace in a sci-fi movie, count me in! It sounds fascinating.

Looking more and more like a summer tentpole, 20th Century Fox's 2012 pic "Prometheus" has moved from March 9 release date to June 8. Fox is negotiating with Michael Fassbender to star as David.

Pic, to be directed by Ridley Scott (who will also produce), will also star Noomi Rapace. Damon Lindelof is rewriting a script penned by Jon Spaihts from an original idea by Scott.

David Giler, Walter Hill and Tony Scott will produce.

Project was first rumored to be an "Aliens" prequel before Fox gave it the "Prometheus" title earlier this month.

"The keen fan will recognize strands of 'Alien's' DNA, so to speak," the helmer said previously in a statement. "But the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative."

Plot details are being kept under wraps.

In the last week, Fox has made the project one of its top priorities for the next year.

In addition to Fassbender and Rapace, studio is planning to cast one major lead, with Angelina Jolie and Charlize Theron circling.

Fassbender has a clutch of pics slated for release this year, including Fox's "X-Men: First Class."

Fassbender has been considering several upcoming roles, including Universal's "Snow White and the Huntsman."
