Oriental Heroes - Chinese Edition
post-English issues
Part 12
text by Hedron

Overview: Everyone who is left battles Ancestor at the Buddhist temple.

Issue 801: Incredible Chap has three new masters who attack Chan Ou-Wan. Can Chan survive? Why didn't Incredible call on these guys before Global Cult was destroyed?

Chan is taken by surprise by their inner power, each fighter seems to be the equal of the Supreme in power. As Chan recovers enough to start fighting back, we see flashbacks showing the three masters confidently telling Incredible Chap that they will take care of things, and make Chap the new leader of Global Cult.

Chan manages to turn things around, killing one of their number, but not before having his left hand broken!

Issue 802: The masters are true experts, as the white- haired one immediately follows up to shatter Chan's entire arm all the way up his body. These guys are tough.

Chan desperately draws up black poison to stop the white- haired master, and uses his Disappearing Act to vanish into the woods. Chap and the red-haired master are amazed at Chan's survival abilities, even with such critical injuries.

The Oriental Heroes (Gold Dragon, Tiger Wong, Baldie, and Barbarian) have trouble with their newest member, Old Supreme. Old Supreme is now a hot-headed young man, the experience of old age is gone, along with all the head injuries he sustained over the past few years of adventures.

Meanwhile, Guy and Ancestor (the Invincible Swordsman) attempt to master the mysteries of ancient evil swords, with the help of a monastery of monks. Showing progress in his humanity, Ancestor has not slain any of them.

Suddenly, Gold Dragon and Barbarian crash through the ceiling. Time for another silly stalemate with the unkillable Ancestor?

Issue 803: Wasting little time, Gold Dragon and Barbarian declare vengeance for Silver Chime! Assuming Guy can make new friends, Ancestor fires his newest flying sword at the heroes.

Trading palms, both Barbarian and Gold Dragon are blasted out the front door into the temple courtyard. That would seem to settle the battle, right?

I was kind of surprised to see Baldie and Green Serpent in the courtyard. As the only remaining "friend" characters from the English run of Oriental Heroes, I hope they don't die here!

A helicopter comes to whisk Guy away, as Incredible Chap's Global Cult shows up to try their luck against Ancestor. Two low-level flunkies of Chap die instantly, causing Chap to reconsider his agreement to join in this gang attack.

Issue 804: Barbarian summons the highest level of Ancient Electric Bolt, sort of an ultimate cyclone. This attack probably would have been enough to kill or cripple the Supreme. But it, of course, has no effect on Ancestor. Barbarian finishes the exchange bloody and exhausted, just like every one of his previous battles with this ageless lunatic.

Now time for Gold Dragon's goofy attack. Gold Dragon couldn't even beat the leaders of Red Sect or Global Cult, what is he thinking? Just send him to Silver Chime's side in Heaven, if he's this stupid.

Showing real sense, Incredible Chap tells Barbarian that this is a hopeless attempt to kill Ancestor, and that they should quit before they start. Barbarian tells him to have courage, and other such nonsense. I think Chap is concerned for his dozens of flunkies that he has carefully reassembled. They will all die if they try to fight this guy!

To drive home the point, Ancestor kills two young boys who try to join in on Gold Dragon's attack. Their fathers mourn their loss. Chap, get your men out of here now. (Is it too late to call back the helicopters?)

Ancestor shatters Gold Dragon's sternum with a killing blow, like if Four-Eyed Ming had tried to stave off the Old Supreme with his Golden Armor. Is Gold Dragon finally dead?

Issue 805: Old Supreme and Chap's men attack, while Barbarian gets beaten on by Ancestor. Will it be enough? Tiger Wong and his new blond fisherman friend show up.

Issue 806: Tiger Wong and his friend combine their chi in an attempt to save Gold Dragon's life.

Barbarian is about to be finished off, when green-haired Puma rushes in to save him. Can he last long against Ancestor?

Puma dies horribly, his brains knocked out the back of his head, as Ancestor advances on a groggy Gold Dragon. Ancestor finally sees there is no point in sparing the youth, he will finish him off. Woodcock embraces Barbarian. The Red Sect chiefs are all dying, it seems the end.

Suddenly, Ancestor's force is met with the rolling energy of Electric Light Kicks. Tiger Wong advances on his foe, who helped cause Maggie's death.

(Recall that Maggie was the sister of Incredible Chap, that is reason enough for Chap to be called here to finish off Ancestor. Sad that it doesn't seem to be going that way.)

Showing he has learned some things since his last clash with Ancestor, Tiger smartly dodges Ancestor's powerful strikes, kicking the ageless one in the face and stunning him. Gold Dragon is glad to see his blood brother.

Things are looking interesting!

Issue 807: In a flashback, we learn the riverbank master gave Tiger Wong a chi infusion. This is the new chi that has surprised Ancestor.

Woodcock and Barbarian have a tearfelt farewell to a dying Puma, who is able to thank his boss before dying. What loyalty.

When confronting Ancestor's power directly, Tiger gets his butt handed to him. But he comes again with a mini- electric hell dragon's stroke, and succeeds in penetrating Ancestor's defense to kick him in the eye!

Issue 808: Ancestor has lost his eye, Tiger Wong put it out!!!

Emboldened by seeing their ageless foe finally maimed, everyone attacks. If he can be blinded, he can be killed!

No longer showing off, Ancestor rips his sword from the ground with his inner power. People are going to die!

Issue 809: None of these people have seen Ancestor use his flying sword trick at full power. He uses it to throw his multitude of attackers off balance. But still, their desperate dodging only prevents killing cuts, almost everyone gets cut by the damn thing as it zips around the temple courtyard.

Everyone bows to the power of Ancestor. With a smile, Ancestor sends it to Incredible Chap, just to show he noticed his arrival. Chap's white-haired master humorously uses Chap as a human shield, causing great merriment to Ancestor.

Old Supreme takes the sword all the way through the center of his chest. A killing blow for anyone, but we saw Ancestor survive doing that to himself. Is it possible that Old Supreme could endure even this?

A new arrival with his own flying sword, a dark haired man. Can't remember if this is a new arrival or a previous foe for Ancestor. This single story has been around too long!

Issue 810: This long-haired black haired guy seems familiar. With all the deaths, this is the new major character to be introduced to move this comic into a new direction.

Making a peace offering, the black-haired man halts the battle. Old Supreme looks very dead, as anyone should after being run through with such a huge sword.

Ancestor takes both swords and flies away. What a silly gimmick they have reduced this comic to.

Guy prays for all those killed in the battle. The blonde boy lightfoots back to the river master's cabin, but is accosted by Incredible Chap and the white-haired master. Meanwhile, the Buddha that had been struck earlier in the battle seems to wake up, startling the old monk!

Conclusion: All ten issues just one long battle. No result but the death of Old Supreme, Puma, and assorted flunkies of Incredible Chap. Well, at least no more Oriental Heroes died.

I don't see how this was interesting to Hong Kong readers. No character development, no stories, nothing changing but an immortal Invincible Swordsman dropped into the wrong comic for no reason. Nothing left of the cults of Thailand, where is White Sect, Red Sect, or Global Cult? Heck, even Incredible Chap's criminal organization has lost all their top fighters.

Well, it's been interesting to see where the journey for our Oriental Heroes goes. By the way, how many innocent people have the Oriental Heroes saved or helped since the English run? Uh huh. That's what I thought.

Hope everyone is having fun with Jademan. I am currently reading through my Jademan scans, identifying hairs on the pages. Those will need to be rescanned when I return home this summer. I am also reading a book on Adobe Photoshop. Maybe I'll learn how to actually use it for scans, one of these days...

Thanks a lot for the interesting summaries Hedron! I understand what you're saying, Tiger Wong (title of this comic in Indonesia), did certainly not evolve in the right direction... Still i find it very interesting and entertaining to read the rest of the story, no matter how silly. Because after all, this is what they wrote, this is 'canon'.

But yes, it is sad. Especially for someone like me, whose hero always was Gold Dragon. Cant say they ever cared about fanservice :p

thanks again
