I was unable to distinguish between the two, but your mileage may vary. While the quality difference is undetectable (for me) the size difference is substantial. Here you have a compilation of thousands of games entire soundtracks at a fraction of the size that a similar release in mp3 would be.
Even a cursory glance will tell you that many games and tracks are missing but such is the way of things. As you'll notice, this is only v1.0 of the VGM archive project so I'm hoping that all of you downloaders will be able to help me flesh out future releases. If anyone has any of the missing games, or tracks, please make them available at underground-gamer or send me a message so that I can integrate them into the next release.
Just to let you all know, I didn't rip a single one of these tracks--not one! I've been collecting these tracks from various websites, torrents, forums, and groups online for quite some time now and I just wanted to collect them all together into one package, give them some sort of comprehensible organization scheme, and rename them sensibly (rather than the "ees1_34.rsn" you find everywhere) so that you all don't have to.
Huge thanks goes out to all the rippers for all of these systems. I've tried my best to give credit where it is due by leaving the release notes untouched in all the folders but unfortunately as I've been collecting these for so long I can't remember where I got them all.

I've included the chipamp plugin for winamp. To the best of my knowledge, all that you need to do to play any of these tracks on your Windows system is to install winamp and then install chipamp. All the files should be autoconfigured to play without you having to do anything else.
