Default Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ, New users read BEFORE posting)

Hi Everyone and welcome to the Helpdesk.
Before posting a new Question, read this FAQ to see if your question is among the most ask and already answered here.

If your question is not answered in this FAQ or in any of the other stickies, you MUST do a search before posting to see if your question have already been answered once before.

I will update this FAQ with more relevant material as time goes.
If you have any suggestions to something that should be added, or a current topic on the list that needs to be improved, feel free to post it here or PM me about it, all contributions are very welcome!

Now, for the FAQ Questions:
  • How to thank
  • How to download
  • Which Direct Download host to choose?
  • Is host X slow for everyone or just me?
  • What to do when getting errors while extracting files
  • How to search on short and often used words (the, from, I, where, ect..)

How do I to thank someone?
As per the 04-26-2010, you need 10 posts before you can use the Thanks button.
When you have more than 10 posts the button will appear in the bottom right corner of the post. Clicking it once will make you thank the poster for his/her post. More information here:
http://tehparadox.com/forum/f10/than...hanges-994833/

How do I download something?
I have written a tutorial covering the basics of downloading, it can be found here:
Tutorial: How To Download

Which Direct Download host to choose?
There are lots of things to consider when choosing a Direct Download host for a premium membership. What you really should be taking into consideration is:
1) Which host do I often find the most of the kind of content I like to download?
2) Which host am I willing to offer money for a premium account and where do I feel I get the most from my purchase?
3) If I am uploading things, where do I get the mosts benefits for doing so?

As which hosts are popular changes often, you need to do your own research on the matter, for pros and cons, do a SEARCH and check out the countless of posts on the subject to get inspiration. Remember, what people prefer is all a matter of opinions and varies from person to person.

Is host X slow for everyone or just me?
Speed to a host depends on 3 things mainly.
1) The speed of your connection.
2) The upload speed of the hosts servers.
3) Your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

You can never download faster than the total speed of your connection. If the connection from you, to the server the file is on is bad, or your ISP throttles the speed for the host, its common you get slower speeds.

The only time you should be really concerned about the speed is when its a lot slower than your total speed, with a premium membership for simultaneousness downloads. By this is meant that if you download many files from the same host at the same time and your speed is still way slower than it should be according to your max speed.

Best way is to wait a few days as their servers may be overloaded, if this keeps on going for an extended period of time, then you may ask other users or the company themselves.

What to do when getting errors while extracting files?
If you are getting an error when trying to extract a file its very likely that the file has corrupted upon downloading. Try re-downloading the file the extraction fails on, preferably without the use of a download manager.
If you are still getting errors check the post to see if others are complaining about this, it may be the archive itself that the poster uploaded that is corrupt in which case the whole thing needs to be re-uploaded.

How to search on short and often used words (the, from, I, where, ect..)
The build in search function does not allow searches for small and common words, and only allows a search every 30 seconds to prevent the servers getting overloaded with search queries. However there is a build in Google search in the Search in the top of your control panel that you can use. This will search tehparadox with Googles search engine and thus allow you to search as often as you'd like with what ever words you choose.

More coming soon...

Nice job Xami. I was also thinking about doing something like this to finally rid this forum of the rediculous amount of new threads pertaining to the same topic. You did a really nice job and this will hopefully (sooner or later) become a sticky.

Something you might want to add, is the not so frequent, but still often asked question about help with the "Text to DLC" thingy. I have a small guide posted in one of my threads which explains the correct procedure. For PC users HERE and agento86 posted a guide for MAC users HERE.

Also, the question that many users have regarding why their IP has been banned can be answered HERE

But now we have 2 FAQs? Would be good to merge those 2 or make it sticky?

Very nicely done, Xami. I am also one of those that thought of doing something like this, and never got around to it. Just as well, since you have done such a superb job.

Thanks for this great post.
