I download Shawshank Redemption and Planet Earth and they all display subtitles on my PS3 when I play them, and in the PS3 I can't turn off the subtitles.

Do I have to go through each individual movie and "re-encode them" without the subtitles, this process takes some time so I would prefer a fast way to remove embedded or hard coded subtitles.

It would be impossible to remove hard coded subs, as they are hard coded into the video footage. Embedded srt/ass subs in a mkv container file can be removed. You don't have to re-encode the entire file to remove embedded subs from a mkv file. I don't know the exact process, but it can be done. I'm sure someone who knows will post.

Try using mkvextract or MKVtoolnix.

Worked! thanks, but I have a lot of files and the Java Ps3 Media Server sees subs in most of them, if any of you use this program, have you encountered this problem and fixed it? I dropped a message on their forum so I guess I should wait until someone can give a reply.

With MKV toolnix, will there be a decrease in quality? I imagine not if I am just taking subs out

No picture quality loss will occur.
