Default How to take apart my laptop

Ok, in Fahrenheit, what temp should my fan come on, and then stay on? I'm running core temp, and it seems to come on when the cores get around 105-110 degrees. As some of you may know, I recently put in a Seagate Momentous 7200rpm drive as a replacement for the Western Digital 5400 rpm drive. The temp differences have been only about 5-6 degrees, so that's not the issue. I've done the whole compressed air thing everywhere. Including as thorough a job as I could around the heat sink. I would like to get to the guts of the pc and do a good cleaning. I've looked online for any sort of instructions on how to get into it, and have found nothing. It's a NV79 Gateway. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you

You might want to google for <your laptop model> service guide. I have my laptop service guide and it did show how to disassemble it and I've been thinking I will need to disassemble it someday to clean out the dust and replace thermal compound.

7200rpm isnt place for laptop :) ssd/5400 is. Its not just temp, its vibrations and sound also.

High temps can also come from "braking/old" thermal compound connection between heatsink and cpu/gpu or whatever.

But in 99% of my work on laptops its blocked heatsinks from dust. You cant believe how dust can close all exhaust from laptop.

Anyway, find some similar disassembling video of your type/brand laptop on youtube, it must be something. After all they are all similar so its not hard even if you don't have any manual or video.

Thank you everyone for your responses.

I looked through this guide already

If all I had to do was take the back panel off to get to the fan, I wouldn't have needed any help. The panel on the back of mine only accesses the RAM.

I've looked through youtube, and can't find anything on my model. I just don't want to take something apart that isn't meant to be.

There will be an instructional video somewhere on stripping your laptop down, I've not had to work on one yet without one.
As mentioned, dust is a major killer of laptops, particularly pet hair, I've seen so many fried because of it.

Note: I just did a search for an instructional and couldn't find one, sorry.

Thanks for looking. But that's what I'm saying. It's like there's nothing out there on my particular model.

The NV79 looks a lot like the NV59 {which is what I have}. I haven't done much with it but it looks like the top of it comes off {remove the keyboard VERY carefully first} when you remove the screws around the bottom edge. There are also a couple screws for the screen and I don't think you'd want to mess with those.

I tried to find a manual for mine and couldn't so that's about the best I can suggest for ya.

Hope this helps!

Peace to you and yours,

Did some hunting around, but info on this one is thin on the ground. Found a teardown on an NV52 on YouTube

Can't imagine the process would be too dissimilar, at least it's within the same model range, but in all honesty, if you don't feel confident, your best bet would be to take it to a professional.

A good tip here, would be, if you know any local students, get them to enquire within the local students union / student association, they generally have contacts within the trade who'll offer discounts in return for the business pushed their way.

Thanks moofburger for looking for me as well. I had seen a couple other videos on the NV52 model, but none went quite as far has that guy did. There are some small differences between the two models. Regardless, after seeing, really, there is no way to get to the fan assembly, I think I'll bring it in.

On a side note, as an experiment, I moved my HD from bay 1 into bay 2. Now the temps are averaging 95-102. Could be that bay's air flow is better or something. I'm going to keep it there for a while and see what happens. The whole point to this is just general maintenance for me. I don't want to have my pc prematurely die on me when there was something I could do to take care of it.

Thanks again everyone
