Hopefully someone has heard of this. I put Windows 7 Ultimate on my computer a couple of days ago and now my Optiarc DVD+RW AD-5170S will not burn a disc of any kind. I have a Dell Inspiron 530 with 2.33 Dual Core Intel. It has a TSSTcorp CDRW/DVD TS-H493B as its primary burner which has no pronlem burning CDs of any kind and reading out DVDs. The Optiarc is the secondaryand was working just fine while the machine had Windows Vista Home on It. It reads DVDs and CDs but just will not write anything. Not through Roxio, Nero, Magic ISO or Power ISO which I use alot. If you put a disc in set it up and push the burn button it just sits there and does nothing. When you try to cut off the program it says not responding and takes forever to shut down. I am not the greatest with computers but I have been working with them for a few years and have never run across this problem before. If anyone has had this problem or could give me some answers it would be very, very much appreciated. By the way all drives are SATA. Thanx in advance, Stormcobra

Are you using the latest firmware for the drive? Just a thought.

1. Have you try to check in BIOS to set SATA to IDE mode for that CDRW/DVD drive? 2. Try ImgBurn instead of other burning software. 3. Get Verbatim CD-R or CD-RW disc. 4. Set burn speed to not more than x16 for desktop CD-RW burner. |

It does indeed sound like a driver problem. As its a Dell computer you could also go to Dells homepage and get the drivers for your model directly from them if Windows does not get the correct / working drivers. |

It's actually a hardware issue. I had it happen to me on HP desktop PC. I burned one DVD perfectly fine, and I tried to burn another one, but it didn't do anything. I tried burning a much slower speed but nothing happen. I tried updating the firmware, and it still wouldn't burn. I bought a new external DVD burner and it fixed my issue. Internal SATA DVD burner that comes with a SATA cable. Thanks to everyone who replied above, the only problem is I have already tried all of the things you have mentioned, short of buying a new DVD drive. I am disabled and not able to afford one right now. I tried imgburn same effect. I could not find a firmware update anywhere online that you did not have to pay for, and Dell doesnt even have the drivers for this drive. Another question comes to mind though. I am trying to use Memorex DVD-R discs, I wonder if this drive just does not support them? Thanks again

some hardware configs just wont work properly with win7, especially oem systems (pre-built by dell,hp or similar) dell deliberately do not support win7 on there older hardware in an attempt to force you to buy there new. you wont find any drivers and often things like dvd players wont show up as they are deliberately left out of the HAL (hardware abstraction layer) on the manufacturers request. buying another different drive may help but then you have no guarantee that the drive will be picked up by the motherboard as dell and other deliberately again add crap to there bios to stop you adding your own hardware. all you can really do is switch back to the o.s that came with the original setup untill you can change the motherboard got a none oem 1. |

Have you tried going through Control panel>System>Hardware>DVD\CD-ROM drives. Select the particular device (drive), right click and select Uninstall. After removing the device in this manner, restart the system and the device should be recognised upon booting up. I have often had this same problem in the past and this method has always helped me as long as the drive itself hadn't died. Good luck! |

Thank you very much nofile404 for the PM. It was very helpful, and thanks to everyone else for their good advice. I have discovered that the drive simply will not burn Memorex discs of any kind, which seems a waste since I have 100 of them, LOL. However I have been sucessfully burning a few RCA DVD-RW discs that I had lying around. Once again thanks to everyone for their help.

I found long ago that using the cheaper discs like Memorex to be a total waste of time and money. I used to get maybe one successful burn from 4-5 discs when using them for recording my friends music demo's. Eventually, I told him to spend the money on decent quality discs instead because there was so much less waste and ultimately, they saved him money. Thread closed! |
