go to start then type in services.msc, search for the program you want to stop right click it click start then right click again properties then in the middle of that small window look for start up type then click on the drop box menu then click on disable. WARNING! if you disable any thing else you don't know what it is can cause your pc to stop running correctly.

Black Viper has dedicated his entire life in watchin them services goin on and off.
That guy created some safe-to-disable service configurations to be used by all average users too.

Depending on your OS. If xp you will have to click start select run and type in either the msconfig.msc or services.msc. If windows 7 then just click start and enter the msconfig or services cmd in the search programs and files box at the bottom.

Use Msconfig/startup first as JnJdomovies suggested as sometimes programs are not registered as a service and all you will need to do is untick the offending program.

If not there then do as darkcloud85 suggested and run services.msc being careful not to disable anything you don't understand.

After this if you want more information about what services are running, such as what you need and what you can do without then follow jbgoode suggestion. Blackviper has put an enormous amount of time into explaining services for the various windows based OS's

Best of luck mate :)

He has good advice and service lists but they only apply to the standard Windows services.
I used his site for many pc repairs where the pc would run slow.
But for 3rd party services you will need to go into the service list, find that offending service and turn it off.

Looks like that program is the Wifi connection manager by Sony.
It also could be a virus depending on where it's located at.

Reading the description should give you a fair bit of idea what is extra and what is not.. Whatever you have not specifically installed.. or you know you don't need it on regular basis you can stop that process.. but be aware that some processes like itunes/quick time/your disc burning software etc etc might be needed to run at all times since there will be a few other features associated with them.. (like if you have nero as your default media player.. you might not be able to play videos if you stop that task thinking you don't have to burn any discs now)

and the processes which you can not decipher (which will be very less).. google is you friend.. :D

Okay, for all of you guys with hundreds of 3rd party services, drivers and stuff, needin to disable a bunch of them there are a few programs out there , like The Ultimate Troubleshooter (AKA TUT), that are up to the task.
http://www.answersthatwork.com/
Ive been usin TUT for quiet a while and I can tell you it is one of the safest tools when it comes to service disablin and stuff.
http://www.answersthatwork.com/TUT_images/TUT_Opening_Screen_v4a.gif
See, this app is quiet a safe bet because there are 1000s of registered folks, reportin back to the TUT HQ of any issues they might have especially after disablin all kinds of services or drivers and the coolest thing is that everythin is color coded (green-yellow-red). Theres actually an explanation down the bottom of this thing tellin you if its okay to disable or not.
If you are gonna use a cracked version make sure theres the most recent database included in the package because you cant let it call home. It'll stop workin after your 1st reboot.

Ive also stumbled upon another little program similar to this one, but it seems I cant remember its name. Maybe if i grab a bud or two it will come rushing into my mind.

For Windows 7 especifically --- one can make it boot faster / quite faster by removing many weird/useless items from the Task Scheduler's job list.
