Battling Butler (1926) Bluray-720p ![]() ![]() Synopsis Quote: The greatest box-office success of all his independent comedies, Battling Butler is a rarely-seen gem that mingles Keaton’s deadpan demeanor and awesome physical agility with a particularly dramatic storyline. Keaton stars as Alfred Butler, a fragile young man whose father sends him into the country where he hopes masculinity will blossom. Ironically, he is there mistaken for “Battling” Butler, a renowned prizefighter of firey temperament. To impress a young lady (Sally O’Neil), Alfred carries on the ruse by engaging in a laughingly inept training regimen, but his harmless charade is soon complicated by the untimely arrival of the true contender (Francis McDonald). When the long-awaited opportunity to prove himself a man finally comes, it is before the gloved fists of the boxer, who initiates a locker-room brawl. There, in a sequence of agonizing tension and delightful surprises, Battling Butler reaches its unforgettable climax. ![]() Download Links ![]()

The Play House (1921) BluRay-720p ![]() ![]() Synopsis Quote: Perhaps Keaton’s most complex undertaking yet, The Play House is a marvel of technical ingenuity. In the first half of this two-reeler, Buster attends a minstrel show where all the performer—the musicians in the orchestra pit and the dancers on stage—are all played by Keaton. Simultaneously. Keaton’s go-to cameraman Elgin Lessley accomplished this feat by masking off part of the lens, shooting one take, rewinding the film, masking another section, and shooting again. At one point, we see nine Busters seamlessly interacting with one another at the same time. Somehow, the technical precision is upstaged by Keaton’s hilarious performance. In the second act, we see Buster—really just a dreaming stagehand—being woken up by Big Joe Roberts and told to get to work. Tasked with dressing a chimpanzee for a show, he dolls himself up like a chimp instead and does what might very well be the best monkey impersonation ever committed to film. ![]() Download Links ![]()

Three Ages (1923) BDRip-x264 ![]() ![]() ![]() Synopsis Quote: Three Ages is an epoch-hopping parody of D.W. Griffith's Intolerance, with Keaton as a suitor pursuing his dream girl (Margaret Leahy) with competition from a burly rival (Wallace Beery) in three different settings: the Stone Age, ancient Rome, and '20s Los Angeles ("The Present Age of Speed, Need, and Greed"). The prehistoric plotline is the silliest and most antic, with Keaton clad in animal skins and a moplike wig, surveying the landscape from the back of a clay-animated dinosaur, using his club to play antediluvian golf and baseball, and presenting his "card" (a flat rock featuring a caricature of his deadpan) to a medium who forecasts his love life by pushing a snapping turtle across a Ouija board. (Leading lady Leahy, who frustrated Buster with her limited range, gets dragged off by the hair when he wins her.) In the Roman strand, Keaton shows up for a Ben-Hur-like chariot race with sled runners and a dog team; imprisoned in a pit with a lion, he gives the beast a manicure. The contemporary story, with Keaton in his trademark porkpie as he gets plastered at a speakeasy and dashes to prevent a wedding in the typical chase finale, is an amusing exercise of his familiar romantic-slapstick template, but was surpassed by him both earlier and subsequently (the football comedy here can't touch College). Three Ages doesn't have the ambition for an intercutting climax a la Intolerance, but settles for being a cute, funny warm-up for grander comic achievements. ![]() Download Links ![]() Last edited by project_mayhem; 05-12-12 at 05:37 AM.
