The Great White Silence (1925) BluRay-720p ![]() ![]() Quote: The extraordinary, heart-breaking official record of Captain Scott’s legendary final expedition to the South Pole, has been fully restored by the BFI National Archive, with a new musical score by Simon Fisher Turner. Captain Robert Scott described Herbert Ponting as ‘an artist in love with his work’, and, after the Antarctic expedition’s tragic outcome, Ponting devoted the rest of his life to ensuring that the grandeur of the Antarctic and of the expedition’s heroism would not be forgotten. The images that he captured have fired imaginations ever since. Ponting’s footage begins in 1910 with the departure of the Terra Nova from New Zealand’s south island, for the Antarctic – a perilous journey during which animals and stores were lost overboard in a gale and the ship had to break through unusual amounts of pack ice for 400 miles to reach the Great Ice Barrier. Ponting took some of his most impressive footage – showing the ship breaking through the ice – from a makeshift platform over the side of the ship. Once arrived on Ross Island, Ponting filmed almost every aspect of the expedition the scientific work, life in camp and the local wildlife – including killer whales, seals, Antarctic skuas and the characterful Adélie penguins. What he was unable to film, he boldly recreated back home. Most importantly, Ponting recorded the preparations for the assault on the Pole – from the trials of the caterpillar-track sledges to clothing and cooking equipment – giving us a real sense of the challenges faced by the expedition ![]() Download Links ![]()

Körkarlen AKA The Phantom Carriage (1921) BluRay-720p ![]() ![]() Synopsis Quote: The last person to die on New Year€™s Eve before the clock strikes twelve is doomed to take the reins of Death€™s chariot and work tirelessly collecting fresh souls for the next year. So says the legend that drives The Phantom Carriage (Körkarlen), directed by the father of Swedish cinema, Victor Sjöström. The story, based on a novel by Nobel Prize winner Selma Lagerlöf, concerns an alcoholic, abusive ne€™er-do-well (Sjöström himself) who is shown the error of his ways, and the pure-of-heart Salvation Army sister who believes in his redemption. This extraordinarily rich and innovative silent classic (which inspired Ingmar Bergman to make movies) is a Dickensian ghost story and a deeply moving morality tale, as well as a showcase for groundbreaking special effects. All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) BluRay-720p ![]() ![]() Synopsis Quote: This is an English language film (made in America) adapted from a novel by German author Erich Maria Remarque. The film follows a group of German schoolboys, talked into enlisting at the beginning of World War 1 by their jingoistic teacher. The story is told entirely through the experiences of the young German recruits and highlights the tragedy of war through the eyes of individuals. As the boys witness death and mutilation all around them, any preconceptions about €œthe enemy€ and the €œrights and wrongs€ of the conflict disappear, leaving them angry and bewildered. This is highlighted in the scene where Paul mortally wounds a French soldier and then weeps bitterly as he fights to save his life while trapped in a shell crater with the body. The film is not about heroism but about drudgery and futility and the gulf between the concept of war and the actuality. ![]() Download Links ![]() Last edited by project_mayhem; 06-09-12 at 12:29 PM.

Glomdalsbruden (1926) BluRay-720p ![]() ![]() ![]() Synopsis Quote: Tore takes over the rundown family farm. Applying his youthful energy, he intends to make it into a big farm like Glomgården on the other side of the river, where beautiful Berit loves. Tore falls in love with her, but her father has promised her to rich Gjermund. As her wedding to Gjermund draws near, Berit runs away and seeks refuge with Tore and his parents. She soon falls deathly ill but recovers, asking for, and getting, her father’s permission to marry Tore. Jealous Gjermund is determined to prevent their wedding, however, in a dramatic climactic scene playing out around the rushing river. The Bride of Glomdal is a melodrama kept in a light tone, and nature is a significant co-actor. Gorgeous mountains and a rushing river frame the film, which was shot in the Norwegian high summer. Very unusually for Dreyer, he was not particularly well prepared for this film. No real script existed and he reportedly read the book on which the film is based on the train to Norway. Moreover, the film was shot in a very short time, because the actors had to return to the theatres after their summer vacation. The film is distinguished by some dramatic scenes with cross-cutting inspired by D.W. Griffith. The scenes fall toward the end of the film, when Tore has to dramatically ford the river to get his Berit. We are treated to a romantic and happy end, a quite uncharacteristic thing for Dreyer. The Bride of Glomdal was generally well received in Norway and Denmark. In particular, the stunning Norwegian scenery was extolled. The film is not among Dreyer’s most important works, though he was quite satisfied with it himself, considering its rather chaotic creation. ![]() Download Links ![]()

Stachka AKA Strike (1925) BluRay-720p ![]() ![]() ![]() Synopsis Quote: Russia, 1912. Sick of the conditions under which they have to toil for a meagre salary, the workers at a factory are on the brink of rebellion. The flashpoint comes when one of their number hangs himself after having been unjustly accused of stealing a tool by his foreman. The workers walk out on mass, refusing to return until their managers have agreed to their terms. The factory owners, fat industrialists with a taste for luxury, are infuriated by this illegal revolt and resolve to bring the workers to heel – by any means possible… It was whilst he was engaged with the Proletkult Theatre in Moscow that a young theatre director and film theorist named Sergei Eisenstein conceived a series of films that would celebrate the Russian revolution. The first of these would be Strike, a piece of pure Communist propaganda that showed the necessity for the proletariat to work together to overcome exploitation by their capitalist paymasters. Whilst the series was not completed as intended, it did provide Eisenstein with subject matter for two other films Battleship Potemkin (1925) and October (1928). These three films established Eisenstein as the most important filmmaker of the Soviet Union and earned him his reputation as one of the greatest cineastes of all time. ![]() Download Links ![]()
