Default Re: Make MKV (and/or AVI) out of Blu-ray/HDDVD ISO image or ANY BD/HDDVD ripped to HD

Thanks tpAVm... great tutorial. It really got me moving in the right direction.

One thing that I noticed, is that Isobuster does not seem to work with ISOs dumped from BR+ protected discs. After I exported the m2ts files out of the ISO w/ Isobuster, Tsmuxer would not load them (unable to determine stream type error).

To resolve this, I loaded the ISO file in a Nero 8 Virtual Drive. I then used ANYDVD HD's "rip DVD" feature to "fix" the m2ts files. After that, Tsmuxer would open the files, and I could follow the rest of your guide.

*Off topic* Can I ask....what is your favorite video encoder to create h264 compressed video w/ MKV container? Can you point me to a tutorial? Thanks

You're welcome. Glad to be of help.
Actually, you're right about Isobuster but I guess most of the ISOs are made from content already ripped to hdd by AnyDVD HD.
With reference to h264 encoders, there are two of them which I think as the best out there for consumer pc based encodes.
1. MainConcept Reference (faster, recommended for high end PCs)
2. Procoder 3
Both of them support quad cores CPUs and could be found in our Applications section.

Thanks for the hardwork!

I followed your intruction on doing "I'm legend" (BD version). However, I got the following issue:

1. When I opened "Stream" folder, it contains many m2ts files, so I choose the most bigger one (about 15GB) to try, and save it as xxx.m2ts in different folder.

2. Run tsMuxerGUI, and try to grab that m2ts file, it showed "can't detact stream type, file xxxxx.m2ts".

Any ideas?

Thanks again!

Ooops, that's very strange indeed. It's probably a "revived" bug of tsMuxerGUI, which is supposedly fixed in version 1.2.0. As a proof, I'm quoting app's changelog (to see this, go at the bottom of the quote).
However, though I've also dealt with this specific movie, that error had never occurred to me so far, therefore I'm unable to reproduce it and check to see what's actually wrong.

Thanks and never mind.

By the way, I also tried other BD movies, and found all of them contains many m2ts files under "STREAM" folder, and the largest one is at least 15GB, is this normal?

Also, if by any chance I got it ripped successfully on my hard drive, can I use the Blueray disc player such as PowerDVD 8.0 to play it? And is the quality the same as the one from the BD disc?

Thanks again!

Your very welcome.
Huge m2ts files size is absolutely normal. Usually, the BD movies have 1 or 2 big m2ts files that contain the main movie. If you rip the BD to hdd, then the quality would be exactly the same, since there's no re-encoding of the video stream taking place. Finally, you won't be able to playback any BD movie ripped to hdd by using PDVD8. You need to have PDVD7 v.3304 or 3319a installed in order to do this.
What I do is download an external srt subtitles file, I rename both the main (big) m2ts and the srt to have the same name and then I use Zoom Player v6 Premium or Media Player Classic Home Cinema version (MPC-HC) to playback this. Since I'm using ffdshow in my playing graph, picture quality and playback performance is way better when compared to PDVD 7/8 or Nero 8.

Cheers

If you have latest version MediaInfo installed, it would be nice to post the main movie's m2ts file info.

I just installed mediainfo and that program cant find the codec of the main m2ts too :D. But someone told me that file is a VC-1 file.

There's no way for MediaInfo or tsmuxeR not to detect VC-1 streams. Apparently, there's something wrong at your end. Sorry.

hi, please indulge a noob...

first, thanks for the detailed how-to and all the follow-ups, it's quite rich and helpful.

after going through all that and perusing as much as I could, I had a couple of problems hopefully someone can help with:

1) I can't get the append working. once I was done appending all 50 files, tsmuxer said it didn't want to create the file (Which had a ridiculously long name, as all the files were named in it). I tried running it with just the first file and it worked fine.

2) the output has the sound not synced. I think it might be a framerate thing, as the sound seems to sync in the very beginning and then is way off by the end. any suggestions?

3) for just the one .mkv I created from the single .m2ts, it's 11gb. the source stuff is 31gb. I've seen some files online that say they are bluray rips that run around 8gb for a whole movie, any suggestions on how to output something like that?

thanks very much!
